Envelio has expanded its Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) with the launch of the Grid Connection Navigator (GCN), a new tool designed to simplify grid connection planning for distributed energy resources (DERs). These include renewable energy projects, battery storage systems and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

As electricity networks grow more complex, utilities and developers face increasing challenges from local bottlenecks and rising connection costs. Large, decentralised loads can slow down projects, especially when grid operators must assess incomplete or speculative connection requests. Envelio developed the GCN to support both developers and utilities in managing these challenges more effectively.

The GCN uses interactive maps to show available grid capacity at medium- and high-voltage levels. This allows developers to identify suitable locations early in the planning phase, estimate connection costs and assess feasibility before submitting formal requests. The tool supports a wide range of projects, including solar and wind farms, battery energy storage systems, data centres and other large electricity users.

Capacity is calculated using hosting capacity and flow-based methods, with generation and load assessed separately. The results are displayed on a continuously updated interactive map rather than a static snapshot. This gives users near real-time insight into grid conditions, helping them avoid locations likely to face congestion.

Users can view the data in a single overview or at parcel level, compare multiple sites and carry out early-stage feasibility checks. For battery storage and EV charging projects, the GCN also takes seasonal and time-based capacity into account.

Compared with Envelio’s Online Connection Check, which is aimed at small-scale users, the GCN is designed for professional developers and larger projects, focusing on where new connections can be made most effectively.
