Iberdrola Renewables Polska, a subsidiary of Iberdrola Group, has secured funding of about €44 million for the development of three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland. The funding has been provided by the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The projects will together deliver a total installed capacity of 160 MW, inclusive of two projects in the Mazovia region with capacities of 38 MW and 42 MW, as well as one project in the Lower Silesia region with a capacity of 80 MW.
The BESS are designed to store electrical energy during periods of lower demand and release it when required. This includes usage during peak consumption hours or when electricity generation from renewable sources declines. Moreover, Iberdrola’s renewable energy portfolio in Poland currently totals 940 MW. This includes around 12 BESS projects spread across multiple regions in the country.
In January 2026, Iberdrola commissioned two large-scale BESS projects, namely, the Romeral and Olmedilla projects, at Alarcón in Cuenca, Spain. These projects have a cumulative capacity of 30 MW/60 MWh. Additionally, they form a part of a wider 173 MW portfolio of six BESS projects, recognised as a Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation and supported with €37.5 million in public funding.
