Reportedly, India and Bhutan have held discussions to strengthen cooperation in the power sector with a focus on hydropower development and long-term transmission planning.
During the meeting, both sides discussed commercial optimisation of power generation from the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu II hydropower project and emphasised early commissioning of the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu I project to support Bhutan’s power exports and regional energy security. The discussions also covered the future roadmap for the Sankosh hydropower project and transmission infrastructure planning up to 2040, with consultations stated to be underway. The two countries further deliberated on streamlining approvals related to power scheduling during Bhutan’s lean generation months to facilitate smoother cross-border electricity flows.
