China On Track To Deploy 380 Gw Of Pv In 2025China’s total installed power generation capacity is expected to reach 3.99 TW by the end of 2025, up 19.2% from a year earlier, with wind and solar accounting for nearly half of the total, the State Grid Energy Research Institute (SGERI) said in its newly released China Power Supply and Demand Analysis Report (2025).
The report said that wind and solar will contribute 500 GW of new capacity in 2025, including 140 GW from wind, a 77.1% year-on-year increase, and 380 GW from solar, up 35.5%. This marks the first time renewable additions will surpass 500 GW per year in China.
By the end of May 2025, China had added 197.85 GW of solar capacity and 46.28 GW of wind for the year, representing year-on-year growth of 150% and 134%, respectively. Cumulative solar and wind capacity reached 1.684 TW, comprising 45.8% of the country’s total generation capacity.
China’s cumulative installed solar capacity has surpassed 1 TW, according to the National Energy Administration. As of May 2025, solar capacity stood at 1.08 TW, or 1,080 GW, up 56.9% from a year earlier.
The country’s power consumption is also increasing. Total electricity demand in 2025 is projected to exceed 10 trillion kWh, about 5% higher than in 2024, supported by ongoing economic growth. GDP is expected to expand by 4.5% to 5.5% in 2025, with 5% as the baseline scenario.
In 2024, electricity demand reached 9.85 trillion kWh, up 6.8% year on year. Industrial use remained dominant, accounting for nearly half of total consumption. Power use in high-tech manufacturing rose 10.3%, outpacing growth in the broader manufacturing sector. In contrast, traditional high-energy sectors such as steel and cement posted declines, weighed down by weakness in real estate and ongoing production restructuring.
SGERI also noted a shift in China’s energy mix. At the end of 2024, total generation capacity was 3.35 TW, with wind and solar making up 42% and non-fossil sources accounting for 58.2%. Coal remained dominant in actual power generation, producing 18 percentage points more electricity than its share of capacity would suggest.
To strengthen grid flexibility and improve interregional power balancing, several ultra-high-voltage transmission projects – including Qingdong, Zhongheng, and Kunyu – are set to come online in 2025.
While overall supply-demand conditions are expected to improve in 2025, SGERI warned that supply could tighten during peak summer periods in some areas. No large-scale power rationing is expected, and the winter outlook is largely balanced.
The report also cited emerging loads such as data centers, 5G base stations, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Data center consumption is expected to exceed 160 billion kWh in 2025, while 5G-related demand may contribute more than 30 billion kWh.
With record capacity additions and accelerating decarbonization, 2025 is poised to be a pivotal year for China’s power sector transformation, coinciding with the final year of the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan.

Italy’S Latest Renewables Auction Attracts 17.5 Gw Of Solar Project ProposalsFrom pv magazine Italy
The first solar energy auction under Italy's new incentive scheme for renewable energy, the “transitional” FER X program, has attracted 1,387 project proposals with a combined capacity of 17,537 MW, according to Italian energy agency GSE.
Prequalified project developers have until Sept. 12 to submit final offers.
The auction also accepted proposals for wind power projects, which totaled 2.87 GW. No bids were submitted for hydropower or residual gas from depuration processes.
Italian authorities expect to allocate more than 600 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity through the auction.
“The data confirm excellent participation in photovoltaics and a trend consistent with expectations for wind power,” said Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. ” The increase in renewable sources is moving in the direction desired, leading to a progressive reduction in energy prices. Thanks to targeted measures and incentives for businesses, costs borne by consumers will tend to decrease, generating concrete benefits for families and the production system.”
In the previous tender under the earlier version of the FER X scheme, which is Italy’s 16th such auction, the GSE awarded 278.5 MW of solar capacity across 53 sites and approved two wind projects totaling 88.4 MW.
Developers submitted maximum discounts ranging from 2.01% to 7.91% off the auction ceiling price of €0.078175 ($0.084949)/kWh. The lowest accepted bid was €0.07199/kWh for a 2.7 MW solar plant in the province of Ancona, central Italy.

Canadian Developer Plans 1 Gw Solar Park In ArgentinaFrom pv magazine Latam
Canada-based Aisa Group submitted a project proposal to build a 1,000 MW solar farm in Jáchal, San Juan, northern Argentina, under the country's investment incentive scheme Régimen de Incentivo a las Grandes Inversiones (RIGI).
The project should be constructed with an estimated investment of around $600 million.
The massive facility is expected to supply energy to unspecified industrial customers in the region and to the national electricity grid.
The RIGI grants tax, customs, and exchange benefits for 30 years to investment projects exceeding $200 million in strategic sectors.
The plan submitted to the RIGI includes connecting the plant to the National Interconnected System, which will allow energy to be dispatched to different parts of the country.
The development of the solar farm is part of the company's expansion strategy in the Argentinian energy sector.
According to official information, the first stage of the project will be implemented at the Gualcamayo mining site, where 50 MW will initially be installed for the mining operation's electricity consumption. Subsequently, the plan includes capacity expansion and the construction of a 500 kV high-voltage link to facilitate integration into the national grid.
In addition to the park in San Juan, Aisa Group is developing other renewable energy initiatives in Argentina. Among these, a photovoltaic project in the province of San Luis stands out, with a first phase of 22 MW capacity and subsequent expansion to 51 MW.
The Ministry of Economy is responsible for evaluating the proposal submitted to the RIGI, which has 45 business days to issue a resolution. Once approved, the company can begin construction under the conditions established by the incentive scheme.
Currently, Argentina's largest PV plant is the 300 MW Cauchari project, which is currently being expanded to 500 MW.

Gamechange Solar Secures 1.25 Gw Tracker Deal For Solar Plant In EgyptGameChange Solar has inked a contract with CEEC-ZTPC to supply its Genius Tracker 1P Single Row system. The trackers will be supplied for the Abydos Solar PV Plant – Phase II in Egypt. The project has been developed by AMEA Power and built by CEEC-ZTPC. It will combine 1 GWac solar photovoltaic power plant with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system.
The project is spread across 20 square km in the Aswan Governorate and is expected to generate approximately 3,000 GWh of electricity annually. The electricity generated will be sufficient to power over 500,000 households and reduce carbon emissions by over 1 million tonnes each year. Furthermore, the commissioning of the project is scheduled for May 2026.Â
Earlier in April 2025, GameChange Solar secured a deal to supply Genius Tracker solar trackers for four new solar ventures, totaling over 500 MW in Southern Africa. These projects are strategically positioned to bolster the region’s energy supply, particularly for critical mining operations, and aid in diversifying the energy mix for a more stable electricity grid.

Shakti Pumps Raises Funds To Build 2.2 Gw Solar Module Plant In IndiaFrom pv magazine India
Shakti Pumps has concluded its qualified institutions placement (QIP), raising INR 2.93 billion from institutional investors.
The company said it will use the proceeds to build a greenfield 2.2 GW high-efficiency solar cell and module manufacturing facility in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, through its subsidiary, Shakti Energy Solutions. The plant will comply with domestic content requirement (DCR) rules and allow Shakti Pumps to gain greater control over its value chain.
The QIP received strong interest from both existing and new institutional investors.
The issue was priced at INR 918.00 per share, a 4.97% discount to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) floor price of INR 965.96.
“We are thrilled by the enthusiastic response to our QIP issue,” said Dinesh Patidar, chairman of Shakti Pumps. “This successful fundraising underscores the trust our investors have in our business model and growth strategy. We are eager to leverage these funds to advance our growth initiatives and enhance value for all stakeholders.”

Germany could install up to 500 GW of agrivoltaic capacity on the most suitable agricultural land, far exceeding its PV expansion target for 2040, according to a new study by Fraunhofer ISE.
The researchers considered all types of agricultural land for the first time and evaluated them using a variety of criteria to identify optimal locations for agrivoltaic systems.
“This is the first study in Germany to consider all types of agricultural land to identify suitable locations, including permanent grassland, arable land, and permanent crops such as fruit, vineyards, or berries,” said researcher Salome Hauger.
Fraunhofer ISE said the criteria catalog included geographical, legal, and regulatory factors to determine technically and legally feasible capacity. The first scenario excluded areas under strict restrictions, such as nature reserves, and identified enough land for 7,900 GW of agrivoltaics. In the second scenario, the team also excluded areas with soft restrictions such as flora and fauna conservation zones, reducing the potential to 5,600 GW.
Regionally, Bavaria showed the highest technical potential, with nearly 3,500 GW deemed feasible. After applying the restrictions from the second scenario, about 2,500 GW remained. The study also found high potential in Lower Saxony and Bremen, while the outlook for agrivoltaics in Saarland was limited. The city-states were grouped with the larger federal states for the analysis.
Based on the general area survey, the researchers applied political, economic, and agricultural suitability criteria in a second round to identify the most favorable locations. The aim was to find areas particularly well suited for agrivoltaics, due to factors such as solar radiation, proximity to a grid connection point, or the presence of permanent crops like wine or fruit that benefit from synergy effects, the researchers said. To support decision-making, the researchers asked experts from agriculture, science, distribution grid operators, and project planning offices to weight the criteria.
As a result, Fraunhofer ISE developed a soil suitability index. This served as the basis for categorizing land into five suitability classes, from most to least favorable.
“An important finding of the study is the role of grid expansion: The lack of grid connection points is a limiting factor for many areas,” said Hauger.
Using geoinformation system-based analyses, the potential for agrivoltaics can be calculated at the individual plot level, with researchers working alongside districts and local distribution grid operators to validate the data.
The “AgriChance” project used this analysis to study the potential in rural areas of the city-state of Hamburg. The researchers created three scenarios to classify the identified areas from a technological and agricultural-economic perspective. They found up to 620 hectares in the Altes Land and the Vier- and Marschlanden regions, where photovoltaics are ideal, especially in combination with permanent crops. The potential for greenhouses is also promising, with 160 hectares of rooftop space able to host nearly 50 MW of solar on existing buildings.
In another study for the districts of Ahrweiler and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, the Fraunhofer ISE team considered spatial planning data, grid data, and crop rotations. The results showed significant potential for agrivoltaics in both districts. On the most suitable land alone, agrivoltaic systems could supply 16% and 12% of each district’s current energy consumption, respectively, said the researchers.

Serentica Invites Eois For 5 Gw Solar Projects In RajasthanSerentica Renewables has invited expressions of interest (EoIs) from land aggregators and renewable energy park facilitators for the development of 5,000 MW of solar power projects in Rajasthan. The company intends to acquire or lease approximately 20,000 acres of land for the proposed capacity.Â
The bidders must have the capability to facilitate land procurement and/or renewable energy parks, including grid-level infrastructure at both central and state transmission networks. The last date for the submission of EoIs is July 18, 2025

Australia Grants Major Project Status To 6 Gw Power Export PlanFrom pv magazine Australia
The Australian government has maintained its faith in SunCable’s plans to build one of the world’s largest solar and battery energy storage projects, complete with the world’s largest subsea transmission link, extending the major project status for the Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink) proposal.
SunCable is planning to develop a giant solar and battery energy storage complex on a 12,000-hectare site at Powell Creek in the Northern Territory’s Barkly region and transmit the renewable energy via a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line to the Darwin region and then on to Singapore via a subsea HVDC cable.
The AAPowerLink project was originally to include 20 GW of solar and up to 42 GWh of battery energy storage but the initial focus has now shifted to create approximately 6 GW of power “for both domestic and international markets, providing enough energy to power around 4.2 million homes.”
Major project status simplifies regulatory applications and approvals for projects that are valued at more than $50 million, face complex regulatory approval challenges, and that are considered “of strategic significance to Australia.” It typically lasts three years.
SunCable said the federal government’s decision to renew its major project status is “a strong endorsement of AAPowerLink’ role as a project of national significance, and the progress we are making.”
“This recognition reflects the pivotal role that AAPowerLink will play driving structural economic transformation in northern Australia, catalysing industrial growth and regional development in the NT, and creating new export opportunities for Australia,” the developer said in a Linkedin post.
“We have a clear vision for a sustainable energy future, strong government support, and a focus on creating legacy partnerships with Indigenous, community and other key stakeholders that will bring this vision to life.”
The AAPowerLink project – taken over by billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes’ private investment house, Grok Ventures, in 2023 after a falling out with former project partner Andrew Forrest – has been the focus of speculation in recent weeks with reports that it had failed to secure funding in its maiden $100 million (AUD 153.8 million) capital raising. The project has also dealt with a string of executive exits, adding to uncertainty over the development.
In the wake of those reports, SunCable said that the capital raise remains alive and is “well progressed with several parties, including investors who will bring the capabilities to accelerate the development of the project.”
“The capital we are raising will fund the next stages of development, which include preparations toward enabling the project to reach financial close,” the company said.
SunCable has said a final investment decision on the $40 billion-plus project is expected in 2027, with construction commencing soon after.
The AAPowerLink project is one of four projects awarded major project status last week by Australia Science and Industry Minister Tim Ayres as part of the government’s strategy to bring online renewable energy and modernize the country’s energy system.
“By granting major project status to key renewable energy initiatives, the Australian government is strengthening its commitments to a cleaner future,” Ayres said.
“Backing in renewable energy projects strengthens and diversifies the local supply chain while directly creating regional job opportunities and attracting further investment.”
Other projects awarded major project status is Diatreme Resources’ $535 million Northern Silica sand mining project near Cairns in north Queensland.
Diatreme says the project will produce three to five million tonnes of high-purity silica sand for 25 years for domestic manufacturing of solar panels, silicon wafers and high-end electronics.
Cobalt Blue secured an extension for its Broken Hill cobalt project in New South Wales that aims to produce battery grade cobalt chemicals. Cobalt Blue aims to establish one of the first domestic critical minerals refining operations and provide enough product to make batteries for about 375,000 electric vehicles per year.
Also awarded major project status was the Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage project, located offshore northwest of Darwin. The Inpex-led Bonaparte joint venture is to support emissions reductions in hard-to-abate sectors such as metal and chemical refining.
