In its new report titled Latin America Energy Storage Outlook 2025, the research and consultancy firm finds that Chile leads the region with the largest installed storage capacity, thanks to its advanced regulatory policies, accounting for nearly half of the total regional capacity.

Kazakhstan Plans New Nuclear Plants And 6.3 Gw Of Renewables By 2030In his annual state-of-the-nation address, Kazakhstan’s president unveiled new objectives for the country’s energy sector. On the nuclear front, Kazakhstan plans to build a second and third nuclear power plant, highlighting a recently signed strategic partnership with China in the nuclear field and expressing openness to collaboration with other international companies.
The government also announced plans to build an additional 6.3 GW of green energy capacity over the next 5 years, significantly boosting the share of renewables in the national energy mix.
At the same time, Kazakhstan aims to leverage its natural advantages—particularly its substantial coal reserves—by investing in “clean coal technologies”, with the goal of ensuring both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency, according to the president.
At the end of 2024, the country had an installed capacity of 1.8 GW of wind and 1.5 GW of solar, accounting for around 11% of the country’s total capacity mix.

Mitsubishi Power Joins Development Of Vietnam’S 1.2 Gw O Mon 4 ProjectJapan’s Mitsubishi Power, an affiliate of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has announced that it has been awarded a contract, in cooperation with South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility Co., to supply two advanced gas turbines and auxiliary equipment for the O Mon 4 Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) Power Plant in Vietnam.
The O Mon 4 plant, with a planned capacity of 1.2 GW, is being developed by the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam). The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to a consortium comprising Doosan Enerbility and Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 (PECC2) of Vietnam.
This project forms part of the Block B – O Mon gas-to-power value chain, a national priority initiative aimed at enhancing Vietnam’s energy security and accelerating its energy transition. As of the end of 2024, Vietnam had an installed gas-fired power capacity of 8.3 GW, representing 9% of the country’s total power mix.

Grenergy Secures $270 Million In Financing To Install 3.5 Gwh Of Batteries In Phase 6 Of Oasis De AtacamaThe agreement will enable the deployment of 3.5 GWh of battery storage capacity included in this phase, as well as financing the acquisition - to be completed in 2024 - of the assets of Repsol and Ibereólica, which are also part of Phase 6.
Elena, with 446 MW of solar power and 3.5 GWh of storage, already has 77 MW of solar power in operation which facilitates its integration into the Chilean electricity system. Therefore, the objective of this financing is to immediately begin installing batteries that will store solar energy from both the existing plant and the electricity grid, taking advantage of the current low prices during daylight hours.
With this new transaction, Grenergy has secured £1,237 billion in non-recourse financing for the entire Oasis de Atacama project, which comprises a total of 0.8 GW of solar capacity and 6.7 GWh of energy storage.
The batteries installed at Elena are the result of the agreement with BYD Energy Storage, a global company specialising in energy solutions, which will supply a total of 6,240 units of its MC Cube T model, equivalent to 624 containers.
This agreement represents the largest supply of batteries in Latin America and the second largest worldwide, consolidating the strategic alliance between the two companies in one of the largest energy storage projects on the planet.
Grenergy will continue to replicate its solar-storage hybrid model in new platforms such as Central Oasis, in central Chile, and in Europe, where the Escuderos project in Spain stands out as its flagship.
The company has a global pipeline of more than 77.9 GWh in storage and 12.5 GW of solar power in various stages of development, which is key to accelerating the integration of solar energy into the energy mix.
“This operation reinforces the confidence of international banks in our hybrid model and the soundness of our strategic plan” said David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy. “Elena is not only the largest phase of the Oasis de Atacama megaproject, but also an example of the excellent execution of our EPC teams. Grenergy Secures Us$270 Million In Financing To Install 3.5 Gwh Of BatteriesGrenergy has secured a senior non-recourse financing agreement worth US$270 million, including a term loan and a line of credit (LC Loan), for the sixth phase of the Oasis de Atacama megaproject, known as ‘Elena’.
The financing has been underwritten by a pool of leading international financial institutions, led by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. (SMBC) as the structuring bank and including BNP Paribas, BBVA, and KfW.
The operation will enable the deployment of 3.5 GWh of battery storage capacity included in this phase, as well as financing the acquisition – to be completed in 2024 – of the assets of Repsol and Ibereólica, which are also part of Phase 6.

India Installs 3.8 Gw Open-Access Solar In H1 2025, Says MercomFrom pv magazine India
India installed around 3.8 GW of open-access solar capacity in the first six months of 2025 with a record 2.7 GW added in the April-June period, according to Mercom India’s “Solar Open Access Market” report.
India’s installations declined by more than 4% from the same period in 2024, when developers had fast-tracked projects ahead of the reimposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) mandate.
Project execution in early 2025 was constrained by delays in connectivity approvals and limited transmission infrastructure. Installations rebounded in the April-June period, with developers rushing to commission projects before the expiration of the inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges waiver in June. Many projects were partially commissioned to secure eligibility for the waiver.
“There is unprecedented demand for green energy via the open access model, but the installation numbers have been subdued due to evacuation infrastructure, supply chain, and policy restrictions. We will find more wind-solar hybrid power projects and battery energy storage integration in the future to circumvent issues including transmission congestion, curtailment, and energy banking restrictions,” said Priya Sanjay, managing director at Mercom India.
In the April-June period, Maharashtra led solar open access capacity additions, accounting for more than 30% of installations.
As of June 30, 2025, cumulative installed solar open access capacity stood at 24.6 GW.
Karnataka retained its top rank in cumulative installations, accounting for about 24% of solar open access capacity at the end of June 2025. Maharashtra and Gujarat ranked second and third, contributing more than 18% and nearly 12% of cumulative installations.

Italy Launches Solar Auction Offering Up To 1.6 Gw Of CapacityItaly's energy agency, Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), has launched the second solar auction under the country’s new incentive mechanism for renewable energy, the transitional FER X program. This procurement round is expected to allocate between 200 MW and 1.6 GW of solar PV capacity. It is open to commercial and industrial solar projects, as well as large-scale PV installations.
For PV projects with a capacity not exceeding 1 MW, the Italian government has excluded the use of solar modules, cells, and inverters manufactured in China. The stated objective of this restriction is to support European manufacturing of these components. This is based on the "EU resilience" criterion, which has been recognized and approved by the European Commission as a valid non-price criterion in public procurement.
In the most recent tender under the earlier phase of the FER X scheme, held in July 2025, the government awarded 278.5 MW of solar capacity across 53 sites and approved two wind projects totalling 88.4 MW. The auction attracted 1,387 project proposals, representing a combined capacity of around 17.5 GW, competing for a total available capacity of 8 GW.
As of the end of 2024, Italy’s installed solar capacity stood at 36 GW.

Taiwan Awards 2.8 Gw Ccgt Power Project To Mitsubishi Power And CtciMitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has secured a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract worth JPY760bn (US$5.2bn) for a 2.8 GW CCGT power plant project at the Tung Hsiao power plant, operated by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), the country’s state-owned power utility. The power plant is located in Tung Hsiao, Miaoli County, southwest of Taipei.
The project will be delivered as a full turnkey solution led by Mitsubishi Power in collaboration with CTCI Corporation, a major Taiwanese engineering and construction firm. It will involve the installation of five units, with gas turbines as the core technology; three M501J gas turbines supplied by Mitsubishi Power will be delivered for the first phase of the project. The five new units are expected to be commissioned sequentially between 2030 and 2031.
In 2024, natural gas accounted for 43% of Taiwan’s power generation.

Gautam Solar To Invest Inr 4,000 Crore In 5 Gw Solar Cell Manufacturing Plant In Madhya PradeshGautam Solar has announced an investment of INR 4,000 crore for establishing a state-of-the-art solar cell manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. The project will be developed on 54 acres of land in Gwalior, where the company will focus on producing advanced TOPCon solar cells with a total planned capacity of 5 GW.
Implementation of the project has commenced with Phase 1, which will include setting up a solar cell manufacturing capacity of 2 GW. The development is expected to be completed by calendar year 2026, the company said in a statement.
It further added that after the successful completion of Phase 1, Gautam Solar plans to launch an IPO to raise funds for Phase 2, which will have an additional 3 GW capacity. Looking forward, the company envisions expanding into solar wafer manufacturing to create a fully integrated solar value chain in India.
Commenting on the development, Gautam Mohanka, Director, Gautam Solar, said, “This investment signifies a monumental achievement, not just for Gautam Solar, but for India’s renewable energy sector. With one of the largest solar cell manufacturing units in India using the latest highly advanced TOPCon technology, we envision to deepen domestic solar manufacturing context while reducing reliance on imports for the ecosystem. Our vision is integrating solar value chains in India from wafers to modules. We are supporting the nation’s transition to clean energy and the Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
The investment highlights Gautam Solar’s commitment to progressing the renewable energy sector and reducing import dependencies in solar technology in India. The project is expected to be pivotal in boosting the domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem and aiding in the clean energy goals of the country.

Syrian Ministry Of Energy And Acwa Power Sign Agreement To Develop 2.5 Gw Of Renewables And StorageThe Ministry of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic and ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company and a global leader in energy transition and green hydrogen, have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to explore the development of approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind projects, alongside energy storage solutions and a proposed national technical training centre.
The agreement provides a framework for conducting detailed technical and commercial studies on existing power plants and the national grid, as well as evaluating and implementing a pipeline of renewable energy and storage projects.
The signing ceremony was held at the Syrian Ministry of Energy headquarters in the presence of H.E. Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir, Minister of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic; Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder and Chairman of ACWA Power; and representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Energy.
Under the JDA, ACWA Power and the Ministry of Energy will identify sites for around 1.0 GW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 1.5 GW of wind capacity, supported by potential grid-scale storage solutions to improve system reliability and flexibility. In addition, ACWA Power will study the establishment of a national technical training centre to prepare skilled technicians for construction and operations across approved projects. Dr. Moayad Samman, Country General Manager in Syria, ACWA Power, said: “Today’s agreement in Syria sets a clear pathway to bring best-in-class solutions to the Syrian power sector — solutions that combine reliable generation, cost competitiveness, and accelerated renewable energy integration. Syria And Acwa Power Sign Deal To Develop 2.5 Gw Of Renewable EnergyThe Syrian government and the Saudi energy group ACWA Power have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to explore the development of approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind capacity in Syria. Under the agreement, ACWA Power will collaborate with Syria's government to identify suitable locations for the planned projects, which aim to deliver around 1 GW of solar PV capacity and approximately 1.5 GW of wind power. Grid-scale energy storage solutions are also being considered to improve system reliability and flexibility.
In June 2025, Syria signed a US$7bn agreement with a consortium from Qatar, Turkey, and the United States to rebuild its power sector, including four gas-fired power plants and a 1 GW solar park. The project is expected to add 5 GW of capacity, covering nearly half of current electricity demand and marking a key step in post-conflict recovery.
Syria’s power system has faced extensive damage since the outbreak of the war in 2011, with ongoing fuel shortages further limiting generation. As of the end of 2023, available capacity was estimated at just 1.6 GW, despite a nominal installed capacity of 9.6 GW.
