USA: OpenAI has announced a major partnership with Oracle to develop 4.5 GW of data centre capacity across the United States. This initiative is part of the ambitious Stargate Project, which aims to build over 10 GW of AI infrastructure within four years. The new data centres will add to the company’s existing 1 GW campus in Abilene, Texas, pushing projected capacity beyond 5 GW –enough to run over two million AI chips.
Though locations have not been finalised, reports suggest Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Wyoming are being considered. Oracle has already begun delivering infrastructure for the Abilene facility, where operations have commenced.
OpenAI estimates the project will create over 100,000 jobs, though most will be linked to construction rather than ongoing operations. The cost of this phase has not been disclosed, but it contributes to OpenAI’s broader $500 B commitment to US-based AI infrastructure.
The Stargate initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, although SoftBank is not financing this specific phase.
This move comes amid a broader race among tech giants to scale computing power, with Google and Microsoft also making major infrastructure and energy investments. The White House has acknowledged the strategic significance of such developments, citing their potential to fuel innovation and economic growth.
