Envision Energy and FERA Australia have announced an agreement to collaborate on the delivery of large-scale hybrid renewable energy projects across Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). The agreement marks the first initiative of its kind in Australia, establishing a framework to develop projects with the potential to deliver up to 1 GW of wind generation capacity and 1.5 GWh of battery energy storage. Envision’s integrated technology platform includes the company’s proprietary ‘Hybrid Power Plant Controller’.
“Partnering with Envision Energy marks an exciting milestone in our pursuit of large-scale renewable projects in Australia. Integrating wind power and energy storage in a hybrid project, will constitute an excellent model for future initiatives.” said Sebastiano Falesi, head of FERA Australia and board member of the FERA Group. “The rapid advancement of renewable energy projects is crucial for supporting Australia’s transition to zero-carbon energy.”
The partnership will launch with a pilot project in Victoria, featuring Envision’s full converter wind turbine, grid-forming battery storage, and HPPC technology in a grid-connected hybrid plant. This project is intended to serve as a showcase for how hybrid systems can enhance grid reliability and unlock new value streams.

Cea Proposes 777 Gw Optimal Power Mix For 2029-30 With 62% Non-Fossil Capacity – ReportThe Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has prepared this report to analyze the Optimal Generation Capacity Mix for 2029-30 as part of India’s efforts to meet growing electricity demand while transitioning toward cleaner energy. This exercise is aligned with national goals under the Paris Agreement, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and India’s long-term net-zero commitment by 2070. The study presents an updated capacity mix plan factoring in technological changes, policy targets, and economic feasibility, with an emphasis on large-scale integration of Renewable Energy (RE) and storage solutions into the power system.
The study uses the National Electricity Plan (NEP) demand projections as its base, which anticipates all-India peak electricity demand to reach 277.2 GW and electrical energy requirement to touch 1,877 billion units (BU) by 2029-30. In response, the report recommends a total installed generation capacity of 777 GW by 2029-30. This would include 292.6 GW of solar, 99.9 GW of wind, 63.6 GW of hydro (excluding small hydro), 94.5 GW of coal-based power, and the rest from nuclear, biomass, and gas-based generation. To manage the variability and intermittency of renewable energy, the plan incorporates 41.65 GW/208.25 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and 18.2 GW of Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs).
The primary objective of this capacity mix is to ensure energy security, grid stability, cost efficiency, and environmental sustainability. The report highlights that coal-based capacity will not increase beyond 2026-27, and further additions will be limited to under-construction plants and those needed for meeting local or seasonal demand variations. The transition will be enabled by accelerating RE deployment, particularly through hybrid and RTC (round-the-clock) models backed by BESS and flexible thermal generation. By 2029-30, about 62% of India’s installed capacity is expected to be non-fossil-based.
The study also considers the financial implications of this shift. Despite high upfront capital costs, RE paired with storage is becoming increasingly cost-competitive. It is projected that solar-battery hybrid systems will match or outperform conventional generation in terms of levelized cost by the end of the decade. Accordingly, policy support, investment in transmission infrastructure, and coordinated planning between central and state agencies will be essential.
The report emphasizes the importance of resource adequacy and system flexibility. It suggests that India must adopt a comprehensive strategy, including demand-side management, fast-ramping thermal units, gas-based peaking plants, and capacity markets to maintain system reliability. The role of new technologies such as green hydrogen, offshore wind, and long-duration energy storage is acknowledged, though these are not included in the current optimal mix due to cost and developmental timelines.
The Optimal Generation Capacity Mix 2029-30 proposed by the CEA provides a realistic and forward-looking roadmap for India’s energy transition. It balances the twin challenges of meeting rising electricity demand and reducing carbon emissions while safeguarding system reliability and affordability. The CEA urges all stakeholders, including policy makers, utilities, and private developers, to align with this vision and take proactive steps in implementing the necessary infrastructure, market reforms, and technological innovations. This will ensure a resilient and sustainable power sector for India’s future.

The early end of US federal tax credits for solar and wind projects may lead to many canceled proposed projects as the economic viability has come under question.
“We conservatively estimate that more than 320 proposed wind and solar projects with a total capacity of over 100 GW would no longer be economically viable, making it significantly harder, if not impossible, to attract capital and meet key development milestones,” said FTI Consulting.
Before the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) passed, the 48E and 45Y tax credits were available to projects until the United States achieved a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2022 levels, expected to persist well into the mid 2030s.
Now, under OBBBA, solar and wind projects that begin construction after July 4, 2026 must be “placed in service,” meaning reaching commercial operations, by Dec. 31, 2027.
Projects that begin construction before the July 4, 2026 cutoff can be eligible for tax credits if a “substantial portion” of the project is built. These projects are “safe harbored” and can gain the tax credit if they are placed in service by mid-2030. Based on a Trump executive order following the bill passage, the Treasury is directed to more strictly interpret safe harbor rules.
Keith Maritn, partner, Norton Rose Fulbright, said to qualify for safe harbor designation, projects likely will need to “incur” at least 5% of the project’s cost. It remains to be seen what the Treasury’s guidance will be on the “start of construction” requirement.
What’s more, foreign entity of concern (FEOC) restrictions begin in 2026, which seek to limit project content or ownership from Chinese entities or Chinese-influenced entities. Read a three-step process for vetting your project’s compliance with FEOC here.
FTI Consulting estimates that 54 GW, or 11% of solar and wind queue capacity, are likely to be impacted by the tax credit cuts for projects planned from 2026 through 2029. Another 49 GW, or 43% of proposed projects planned for 2030 through 2034 are likely no longer financially viable, said FTI Consulting.
The business consultancy said these changes to clean energy industrial policy threaten to derail critical infrastructure deployment at a time where the U.S. power grid faces elevated capacity and energy risks.
It noted grid operators in ERCOT and PJM project record-setting load growth of 53 GW and 37 GW (63% and 25% of 2023 observed peak load, respectively) through 2030.
The expected load growth in ERCOT and PJM “highlights the urgent need to accelerate generation capacity expansion to support economic activity.”
FTI Consulting said the removal of planned projects comes at a time when reserve margins are shrinking and capacity shortfalls loom may undermine the grid’s ability to support the United States’ AI and manufacturing ambitions.
It warned that the passage of OBBBA could be deemed a force majeure event under existing offtake agreements, allowing utilities to default on contracts for projects rendered economically unviable.
“Utilities will need to seek alternatives less affected by H.R. 1 [OBBBA] to bridge capacity shortfalls. Without coordinated policy and regulatory support, however, the risk remains high that the U.S. power grid will not be able to support the next wave of technological and industrial expansion,” said FTI Consulting.

OLADE’s technical note 10, entitled “Energy Storage in Latin America and the Caribbean – Current Status, Challenges and Strategic Recommendations” reports 2.5 GW of installed capacity in the region.
Energy storage installations are being driven by a wider penetration of renewable energy and related grid limitations. Chile, Brazil, and Mexico are among countries leading the way for energy storage, the note said, with Central American and Caribbean nations installing smaller projects.
OLADE reported that lithium-ion batteries account for around 60% of the region’s energy storage and are used in solar-plus-storage sites as well as standalone, grid-strengthening projects.

Australia, Queensland: Irish developer DP Energy is aiming to build a 1.4 GW wind farm and 500 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Australia. The project will be called the Windy Plains Renewable Energy Park and will be located about 40 km southeast of Julia Creek in McKinlay Shire, Queensland.
It will consist of 197 wind turbines with an installed capacity of up to 1.4 GW and will be supported by BESS facilities of around 500 MW/2000 MWh. The proposed site has several benefits including optimal wind speeds, large land blocks with minimal proximity to neighbouring dwellings, and flat topography which will lead to cost-effective deployment, and it is situated near to the new CopperString transmission line being constructed by Powerlink Queensland.
Windy Plains is in the project feasibility stage, with environmental, cultural heritage, and technical assessments underway. Approvals from regulators will follow after more detailed studies and consultation have taken place.

Earlier in February 2025, DP Energy was granted EPBC approval from the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for the 430 MW Callide wind farm. The project is situated in the Calliope Range in Queensland, Australia.

Final Green Light For 3.2 Gw Sizewell C Nuclear Plant In The UkThe UK government has given final approval for the Sizewell C nuclear power project in eastern England by signing the final investment decision (FID), following commitments from both British and international investors, including Canadian pension fund La Caisse.
The government has confirmed that it will take an initial 44.9% stake, becoming the project’s largest equity shareholder. The new group of shareholders includes La Caisse with 20%, Centrica with 15%, and Amber Infrastructure with an initial 7.6%. French energy group EDF, which had already committed earlier in July 2025, holds a 12.5% stake. The Sizewell C project will involve building two nuclear reactors using EPR technology, located at the existing Sizewell nuclear site. The new reactors will have a combined capacity of 3.2 GW. Designed as a replica of the two EPR reactors currently under construction at Hinkley Point C (also supported by EDF), Sizewell C is expected to be operational by the mid-to-late 2030s.
This project is part of the UK’s broader plan to expand nuclear power capacity to 24 GW by 2050.

Apatura Hits 2 Gw Energy Storage Milestone With Planning Consent For New 560 Mw Bess At ClydebankThe 29-hectare site is the eleventh BESS development that Apatura has secured planning permission for in the last two years. With this latest approval, Apatura has now secured permission to build a combined total of more than 2.1 GW in electricity storage capacity at sites across central Scotland.
The planned development is located on land adjacent to Cochno Road, two miles from Clydebank and eight miles from the city of Glasgow. The new site will connect via an underground cable to the Windyhill substation 560 metres away and also the Drumchapel substation two miles away.
“The Whitehall project is in a carefully chosen strategic location that will directly support the UK’s energy security strategy” said Andrew Philpott, Chief Development Officer at Apatura. “Once commissioned, it will play a key role in providing the resilient infrastructure network needed for a net zero future. Battery storage plays a major role in Scotland and the wider UK’s transition to a low carbon energy system and economy. Projects like Whitehall will directly contribute to stabilising energy prices and reducing bills for households and businesses, and are also integral to the UK’s goals of cutting emissions and boosting energy independence and security. In the Decision Letter granting consent, Scottish ministers said they “regard the proposed development as essential infrastructure. Through the provision of energy storage, it adds flexibility and resilience necessary to maintain secure and reliable supplies of energy to all our homes and businesses as our energy transition takes place.”
This latest consent follows the news that Apatura secured planning permission for two new battery storage developments - a 100 MW/200 MWh project in Killwinning, North Ayrshire in May: and a 50 MW/100 MWh project at East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire in April.

Major Construction Milestone At 1.4 Gw Sofia Offshore ArrayRWE has reached a major construction milestone at its Sofia offshore wind farm, located on Dogger Bank 195 km off the north-east coast of the UK, with the successful installation of the 100th and final steel monopile foundation. This concludes a 14-month foundation installation campaign executed by Van Oord as part of a joint engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract for wind turbine foundations and array cables.
The 1.4 GW Sofia array is located in water depths of 20-35 metres and is RWE’s largest offshore project currently under construction globally. om wind energy. The foundations, manufactured by EEW, are considered to be state of the art. Rather than using a monopile topped with an overlapping separate transition piece, an extended single monopile is installed and secondary steel fitted offshore. This significantly reduces the total steel tonnage required to complete the project.
The installation works started in May 2024 using Van Oord’s jack-up vessel ‘Aeolus.’ The vessel underwent a project-specific upgrade to its crane system to achieve a 1650-tonne lift capacity, enabling it to handle Sofia’s heaviest monopiles. The precision of the installation is critical, as each of the steel cylinders will form a solid base for the 14 MW 252-metre-tall Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, half of which are being installed with recyclable blades. The first turbine was installed in March with 27 completed to date.
During construction, Sofia has deployed a full-scale bubble curtain noise abatement system for 34 foundations – a first for the UK. The technology, operated by Hydrotechnik Offshore, creates a barrier of bubbles that significantly reduces underwater noise during piling operations, helping to protect marine species in the Southern North Sea Special Area of Conservation.
The installation campaign was carried from the Port of Tyne, the primary storage and marshalling location in the NE of England for all the foundation components. With foundation installation complete, Van Oord is now progressing the burial of approximately 360 km of array cables, with completion expected later this year.

Talen Energy Seals Us$3.5Bn Takeover Deal For 2 Ccgt Plants (2.9 Gw) In The UsTalen Energy Corporation, a US independent power producer (IPP), has signed definitive agreements to acquire US-based Caithness Energy’s 1,050 MW Moxie Freedom Energy Center in Pennsylvania, as well as the 1,875 Guernsey Power Station in Ohio, jointly owned by Caithness Energy and BlackRock. Both facilities are CCGT power plants located within the PJM (Pennsylvania–New Jersey–Maryland) power market. The total acquisition value is approximately US$3.5bn.
Additionally, Talen will acquire equity interests in Guernsey from funds managed by Global Infrastructure Partners, a US infrastructure investment firm now operating under BlackRock. The transactions are expected to close by the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals, including from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
These acquisitions will expand Talen’s generation fleet and increase its annual output capacity from 40 TWh to 60 TWh.

Sweden Fully Permits Vattenfall'S 1.2 Gw Kattegat Syd Offshore Wind ProjectAll major permits are now in place for the 1.2 GW Kattegat Syd offshore wind park, located off the coast of Falkenberg in Sweden. The construction and operation of the 1.2 GW offshore wind farm were authorised in May 2023. In April 2025, the Swedish government approved the installation of submarine cables for Kattegat Syd — including both export and inter-array cables — as well as detailed seabed surveys of the project area. Vattenfall has also secured the required grid concession for the installation and operation of both offshore and onshore export cables. Vattenfall anticipates that Kattegat Syd could be commissioned in the early 2030s, although a final investment decision (FID) has not yet been made. Once operational, the wind park is expected to generate approximately 5 TWh/year of electricity.
As of the end of 2024, Sweden had only 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity, compared to around 17 GW of onshore wind. The country aims to achieve a fully fossil-free electricity system by 2040.

India Awards 7.6 Gw Of Battery Storage In H1 2025From ESS News
A new report by Rystad Energy says India awarded 5.4 GW of colocated solar plus BESS and 2.2 GW of standalone BESS to developers in the first half of 2025. This marks the nation’s highest BESS allocation to date.
Average quoted tariffs stood at around INR 4,000 ($48.02) per megawatt-hour (MWh) for standalone BESS and INR 3,208 ($38.50) per MWh for colocated solar-BESS projects—a downward trend in pricing that could encourage more developers to pursue integrated installations over standalone solar.
Among the top developers, Jindal Group secured 990 MW of colocated solar and BESS capacity, while NTPC and ReNew each won 900 MW in the same category.
