Poland’s URE has shared the results of seven renewables auctions that took place this month.
An auction for solar and wind installations greater than 1 MW selected 95 solar bids with a combined capacity of 1,623 MW and three onshore wind bids totaling 82.7 MW.
The minimum price for solar agreed under the auction was PLN 216.90 ($59.46)/MWh compared to a maximum price of PLN 329.68/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 389/MWh.
The minimum price for wind agreed was PLN 100/MWh compared to a maximum price of PLN 320/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 324/MWh.
Meanwhile, an auction for solar and wind installations of no more than 1 MW selected 83 solar bids with a combined capacity of 47.7 MW and no wind bids.
The minimum price for solar awarded under the auction was PLN 314.77/MWh, compared to a maximum price of PLN 374.77/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 414/MWh.
As happened last year, a further five auctions were held covering hydroelectric power plants, agricultural biogas plants and installations using biomass and biogas other than agricultural. These auctions were not resolved due to a lack of offers, as Polish law stipulates an auction must receive at least three valid offers to be contracted.
URE said 21% (16 TWh) of the total electricity allocated across the seven auctions was approved, for 30% (PLN 5.0 billion) of the total value available.
Poland’s solar capacity reached 21,994 MW by the end of the first quarter of 2025, according to a new report from the country’s Instytut Energetyki Odnawialnej (IEO).

Saudi Arabia Signs 5 Solar Ppas Totaling 12 GwIn Saudi Arabia, five solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) have been signed for a total capacity of 12 GW.
The PPAs were signed between the Saudi Power Procurement Company and a consortium led by ACWA Power acting as the main developer, in partnership with the Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) and Aramco Power.
The solar projects include the 3 GW Bisha project in the Aseer region of southern Saudi Arabia, which has an agreed levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of SAR 0.0484 ($0.0129)/kWh.
The PPAs also cover the 3 GW Humaji project in the western Madinah region, with a LCOE of SAR 0.049/kWh, and the 2 GW Khulis project in the western Makkah region with a LCOE of SAR 0.051/kWh.
The five solar PPAs are rounded off by two 2 GW projects in the Riyadh region, Afif 1 and Afif 2, each with an agreed LCOE of SAR 0.047/kWh.
A further two PPAs, covering two wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 3 GW, were also signed. The seven agreements represent the largest capacity globally signed for renewable energy projects in a single phase, a statement from the Saudi Power Procurement Company says.
Together, the seven projects have a total investment of SAR 31 billion ($8.3 billion) under the country’s National Renewable Energy Program. Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, commented that the agreements are the largest and most comprehensive under the program to date.
Scheduled to be operational across the second half of 2027 and the first half of 2028, the financial close of each of the seven projects is expected by the third quarter of this year.
The Saudi Power Procurement Company is a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company and is responsible for procuring, selling and trading energy within Saudi Arabia. Its work includes preparing feasibility studies and tendering electricity generation projects alongside signing PPAs with developer consortia.
According to data available on its website, the company has launched over 43 GW of renewable electricity generation projects since its inception. There are PPAs in place for over 38 GW of the capacity, with over 10 GW already connected to the grid.
Capacity connected to the grid is expected to reach 12.7 GW by the end of 2025 and surpass 20 GW by the end of next year.
Saudi Arabia's cumulative solar capacity surpassed 4.2 GW by the end of last year, according to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Iberdrola Plans 1.32 Gw Pumped-Hydro Storage Project In PortugalFrom pv magazine Spain
Iberdrola has initiated the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for the Minhéu Hydroelectric Power Project, a pumped storage facility with 1,320 MW of installed capacity. If built, it would be the largest pumped-hydro station in Portugal.
The Minhéu project is designed to complement Iberdrola’s Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex by increasing the system’s energy efficiency and storage capacity. It includes construction of a reservoir in the Cumeada area on Monte de Minhéu, hydraulically linked to the Alto Tâmega dam. Iberdrola holds exclusive rights to use the dam’s water resources.
The planned reservoir will not draw from any additional water basins. It will operate only with water already licensed for the Alto Tâmega reservoir.
The plant will run in reversible mode, using the elevation difference between the reservoirs for pumping and turbine operation. Iberdrola expects the project to add between 2,500 GWh and 3,000 GWh of annual output.
The project is open for public consultation from Friday through July 3.
Iberdrola commissioned the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex in 2023. The facility includes the Alto Tâmega reservoir (160 MW), the Gouvães pumped storage plant (880 MW), and the Daivões plant (118 MW). Gouvães and Daivões have been in commercial operation since 2022.

Implementation will be overseen by the Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA), which will coordinate with various departments for hydro and pumped storage initiatives. A resource inventory will be created for each district to streamline land allocation and planning.

In Detail :India has the potential to supply 52 GW of round-the-clock (RTC) clean power by 2030, which could lead to annual savings of around ₹9,000 crore, according to a new report by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW). The study highlights the economic and environmental benefits of shifting to a diversified clean energy mix.
The report suggests that a combination of solar, wind, hydro, and storage solutions can reduce wholesale power costs by 6 to 18 paise per unit. This, in turn, could lower overall power procurement bills by ₹13,000 to ₹42,400 crore annually, offering significant financial relief to utilities and consumers alike.
The analysis models 15-minute dispatch intervals to simulate realistic power system operations. It proposes a 2030 target of 600 GW of non-fossil capacity, comprising 377 GW of solar, 148 GW of wind, 62 GW of hydro, and 20 GW of nuclear energy. This mix is projected to enhance energy reliability and security.
A crucial part of the strategy involves integrating energy storage into the grid. The report recommends 70 GW of four-hour battery storage and 13 GW of pumped hydro storage to manage intermittency and ensure continuous power supply. These technologies are vital for maintaining grid stability and supporting RTC energy delivery.
Beyond cost savings, the shift to clean RTC power could cut carbon emissions by 9% to 16% and generate 53,000 to 100,000 new jobs. Importantly, the approach would also eliminate the need for new coal-based power plants, supporting India’s broader climate goals.
To realize this vision, the report calls for reforms in land use, improved state-centre coordination, streamlined transmission development, and strong policy signals. These include uniform tariffs and promotion of hybrid clean energy projects. The recommendations aim to align economic growth with environmental sustainability in India’s rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Brazil May Add 36.5 Gw Of Solar By 2029, Says Grid OperatorFrom pv magazine Brazil
The combined share of utility-scale and distributed solar in Brazil’s electricity mix is projected to reach 32.9% by the end of 2029, up from 22.2% in December 2024.
Installed solar capacity is expected to rise from 51.7 GW to 88.2 GW during this period. Distributed generation will grow from 35.1 GW to 64.1 GW, while centralized utility-scale PV capacity will increase from 16.6 GW to 24.1 GW.
This growth would make solar the second-largest source of installed capacity in the National Interconnected System (SIN).
The projection comes from the 2025-29 Energy Operation Plan released this week by the National System Operator (ONS).
The 2025 plan projects a 36 GW increase in total installed capacity, growing from 232 GW in December 2024 to 268 GW by the end of the forecast period. The total includes existing and anticipated micro and mini distributed generation (MMGD).
Energy demand is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3.4%, reaching 94.6 GW by 2029. This figure includes the load contribution of MMGD.
São Paulo will lead MMGD expansion with 5 GW expected during the study period. Minas Gerais follows with 2.6 GW, then Rio de Janeiro with 2.1 GW, Paraná with 1.8 GW, Goiás with 1.7 GW, Rio Grande do Sul with 1.6 GW, Ceará with 1.2 GW, and Pará and Mato Grosso with 1.1 GW each.
The SIN electricity matrix will continue to show a high share of inflexible generation, which is projected to account for 75% of total load in 2026 and 73% in 2029. Inflexible generation must be dispatched without regard to system demand.
The SIN’s pumped-hydro storage capacity remains around 292 GW/month. However, the degree of regularization is expected to decline, increasing dependence on rainfall to refill reservoirs each hydrological year. Storage levels at the end of the rainy season in April will be increasingly critical to meeting load.
Given the high share of inflexible generation and growing need for fast-response resources, ONS advised against adding thermal capacity with high inflexibility or slow ramp-up times over the next five years.

In Detail :India added a record 21.9 gigawatts of new solar and wind capacity in the first half of 2025, marking a 56% year-on-year increase. According to data from JMK Research, this growth reflects a strong push in both utility-scale and distributed renewable energy deployment across the country.
Out of the total additions, solar energy contributed 18.3 GW, including 14.3 GW from large-scale utility projects and 3.2 GW from rooftop installations. Wind energy accounted for the remaining 3.5 GW. This marks one of the highest first-half installations in India’s renewable energy history.
The second quarter of the year saw the bulk of these installations. Rooftop solar deployment grew by 76% compared to the same period in 2024, while utility-scale solar rose by 49%. Wind capacity additions jumped 84%, underlining broad-based momentum across renewable sectors.
By the end of June 2025, India’s total installed renewable energy capacity stood at approximately 234 GW. Solar power contributed about 50% of this total, followed by wind at 22%, large hydro at 21%, and smaller contributions from biomass and small hydro sources.
States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra led the way in capacity additions, collectively accounting for over half of the new installations. These states have been central to India’s renewable energy drive, offering high solar and wind potential as well as investor-friendly policies.

China On Track To Deploy 380 Gw Of Pv In 2025China’s total installed power generation capacity is expected to reach 3.99 TW by the end of 2025, up 19.2% from a year earlier, with wind and solar accounting for nearly half of the total, the State Grid Energy Research Institute (SGERI) said in its newly released China Power Supply and Demand Analysis Report (2025).
The report said that wind and solar will contribute 500 GW of new capacity in 2025, including 140 GW from wind, a 77.1% year-on-year increase, and 380 GW from solar, up 35.5%. This marks the first time renewable additions will surpass 500 GW per year in China.
By the end of May 2025, China had added 197.85 GW of solar capacity and 46.28 GW of wind for the year, representing year-on-year growth of 150% and 134%, respectively. Cumulative solar and wind capacity reached 1.684 TW, comprising 45.8% of the country’s total generation capacity.
China’s cumulative installed solar capacity has surpassed 1 TW, according to the National Energy Administration. As of May 2025, solar capacity stood at 1.08 TW, or 1,080 GW, up 56.9% from a year earlier.
The country’s power consumption is also increasing. Total electricity demand in 2025 is projected to exceed 10 trillion kWh, about 5% higher than in 2024, supported by ongoing economic growth. GDP is expected to expand by 4.5% to 5.5% in 2025, with 5% as the baseline scenario.
In 2024, electricity demand reached 9.85 trillion kWh, up 6.8% year on year. Industrial use remained dominant, accounting for nearly half of total consumption. Power use in high-tech manufacturing rose 10.3%, outpacing growth in the broader manufacturing sector. In contrast, traditional high-energy sectors such as steel and cement posted declines, weighed down by weakness in real estate and ongoing production restructuring.
SGERI also noted a shift in China’s energy mix. At the end of 2024, total generation capacity was 3.35 TW, with wind and solar making up 42% and non-fossil sources accounting for 58.2%. Coal remained dominant in actual power generation, producing 18 percentage points more electricity than its share of capacity would suggest.
To strengthen grid flexibility and improve interregional power balancing, several ultra-high-voltage transmission projects – including Qingdong, Zhongheng, and Kunyu – are set to come online in 2025.
While overall supply-demand conditions are expected to improve in 2025, SGERI warned that supply could tighten during peak summer periods in some areas. No large-scale power rationing is expected, and the winter outlook is largely balanced.
The report also cited emerging loads such as data centers, 5G base stations, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Data center consumption is expected to exceed 160 billion kWh in 2025, while 5G-related demand may contribute more than 30 billion kWh.
With record capacity additions and accelerating decarbonization, 2025 is poised to be a pivotal year for China’s power sector transformation, coinciding with the final year of the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan.
