Scatec ASA has commissioned the first phase of its Obelisk solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Egypt. The project has a total planned capacity of 1.1 GW of solar PV along with a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS component. The first operational phase comprises 561 MW of solar PV capacity and the full 100 MW/200 MWh BESS system, while the second phase, currently under construction, will add 564 MW of solar capacity and is scheduled to begin operations in the summer of 2026. The project is being positioned as one of the largest hybrid solar-plus-storage installations in Africa.
