Spain’s Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE) has issued a provisional funding proposal for the country’s first call for innovative energy storage projects, co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2021–2027 budget.
The call, launched in May, allocated €839.7 million ($977.3 million) – 20% more than initially planned – with only about €59,000 remaining unawarded. Developers have pledged €1.99 billion in total investment for 144 projects representing 2.61 GW and 11.14 GWh of capacity.
Battery energy storage systems accounted for 124 of the selected projects, while 17 involved thermal or power-to-heat storage and three were pumped hydro sites.

1 Gw Rtc Renewable Project In Uae Commences ConstructionConstruction has commenced on a large-scale round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy project in the UAE, being developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). The project consists of a 5.2 GW solar plant with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system, capable of delivering 1 GW of continuous renewable power. It aims to address renewable intermittency and deliver gigascale baseload power at a globally competitive tariff.
The project represents a total investment of more than AED 22 billion and is expected to become operational by 2027. It will create over 10,000 jobs and support the establishment of new manufacturing units. Once operational, it will help offset nearly 5.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Furthermore, the project incorporates advanced features such as virtual power plant systems, grid-forming and black start capabilities, AI-based forecasting and intelligent dispatch.
Earlier this month, EWEC awarded the contract for the 1.5 GW AC Khazna solar project to ENGIE and Masdar, followed by the signing of a power purchase agreement between EWEC and the developers. Under the agreement, ENGIE and Masdar will design, finance, construct, and operate the plant near Al Khazna in Abu Dhabi, with EWEC paying only for the net energy supplied to the grid.

Tennet To Grant Grid Access To 6 Gw Of Dutch Battery ProjectsFrom ESS News
Earlier this year, Tennet’s large-scale introduction of time-dependent transmission rights (TDTR) contracts in the Netherlands offered a glimmer of hope to more than 70 GW of customers, mainly large-scale battery energy storage projects, currently stuck in the grid connection queue. According to the latest information, the lion’s share of the newly unlocked grid capacity will be allocated to batttery storage.
The Dutch transmission system operator said that up to 9.1 GW of capacity is available on the high-voltage grid during off-peak hours – capacity that could be effectively utilized through TDTRs.
TDTR give customers connected to the TenneT high-voltage grid the right to transport for a fixed number of hours per year, at least 85% of the time.

Iea Predicts Global Renewable Power To Surge By 4,600 Gw By 2030, Led By Solar Expansion – EqIn Short : The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects a massive 4,600 GW increase in global renewable power capacity by 2030—equivalent to the combined capacity of China, the EU, and Japan. Solar PV will lead nearly 80% of this growth, followed by wind and hydropower. Despite rapid expansion, the world still falls short of COP28’s goal to triple renewables by 2030.
In Detail :The International Energy Agency (IEA) has forecast a record global increase of about 4,600 gigawatts (GW) in renewable power capacity between 2025 and 2030. This expansion is equivalent to the combined current capacity of China, the European Union, and Japan. The surge represents a major acceleration in clean energy adoption worldwide, driven by rapid technology advancement and policy support.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is expected to dominate this growth, accounting for nearly 80% of new installations. Falling module prices, faster permitting processes, and strong consumer demand for distributed solar systems are fueling this rapid expansion. Residential, commercial, and industrial solar installations are all expected to play a crucial role in this transformation.
Wind energy, both onshore and offshore, will also see strong growth, supported by continued investment and policy backing. However, challenges such as supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and lengthy approval procedures may slow the pace of deployment in some regions. Despite these hurdles, wind power remains a key component of the global renewable energy mix.
Hydropower, particularly pumped storage projects, is expected to provide essential grid balancing and reliability support. While growth in new hydropower projects remains modest, its contribution to energy storage and flexibility will be critical as countries integrate higher shares of variable renewable energy sources into their power systems.
The IEA report notes that, despite the record pace of expansion, the world is still short of achieving the “tripling renewables” target established at COP28. Achieving this goal will require overcoming barriers related to financing, grid infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks. Without significant policy and investment shifts, many countries may struggle to meet their 2030 clean energy commitments.
Regional trends show that while advanced economies continue to lead in capacity additions, emerging economies are rapidly catching up. Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East are expected to experience strong growth, narrowing the gap in renewable energy deployment between developing and developed regions.
In some regions, including the United States and China, the IEA forecasts a slight downward revision in renewable growth due to regulatory changes, economic fluctuations, and grid integration challenges. However, both countries are still expected to contribute significantly to global renewable capacity through large-scale solar and wind developments.
By 2030, renewables are projected to account for nearly 45% of global electricity generation, making them the largest single source of power globally. This shift marks a historic turning point in the global energy landscape, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and advancing efforts to achieve net-zero emissions targets.
To fully realize this potential, the IEA emphasizes the urgent need for investment in transmission networks, energy storage, and flexible grid systems. Strengthening international cooperation and implementing stable policy frameworks will be crucial for ensuring that renewable energy expansion continues at a pace necessary to meet global climate goals.

Masdar, Ewec Break Ground On 1 Gw Baseload Solar-Plus-Storage ProjectMasdar and EWEC have begun construction on what they describe as the world’s first gigawatt-scale renewable energy project to deliver continuous, round-the-clock power.
The development combines a 5.2 GW solar plant with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system. The two companies first announced plans in January to develop the solar-plus-storage installation in Abu Dhabi, aiming for operational status by 2027.
The project is valued at more than AED 22 billion ($5.99 billion) and is set to create more than 10,000 jobs, according to an online statement by Masdar. Once completed in 2027, it is expected to offset about 5.7 million tons of carbon emissions a year.
Masdar said the facility will act as a blueprint for global renewable deployment by overcoming the intermittency of solar generation and producing baseload energy at competitive cost.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, chairman of Masdar, said the project underscores the collaborative strength of Abu Dhabi’s energy sector.
“This world-first project, the largest and most ambitious in Masdar’s history, is a blueprint for the world, demonstrating that renewable energy can be dispatched around the clock,” added Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
Masdar, which has storage projects in several countries, said it is targeting 100 GW of total clean energy capacity by 2030.
In September, a consortium led by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. (Masdar) was awarded the contract to develop a 500 MW solar-plus-storage project in Oman, integrating a 100 MWh battery system.
And in July, Masdar and EDF's joint venture, Emerge, signed a 20-year agreement to install a 621 kWp rooftop PV system atop a carport structure in Saudi Arabia's Misk City.

Iraq And Ge Sign Deal For 3 Gw Gas Power PlantIraq: Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has signed an agreement to construct the 3 GW Al-Faw gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Basra, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to expand its electricity generation capacity.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the contract was concluded between the Southern Power Production General Company and Advanced Technology Systems Company, both Iraqi entities, with implementation to be carried out by US-based General Electric (GE). The investment is planned to span 25 years, the Minister of Electricity confirmed.
The project will operate under a “Take and Pay” model, meaning the government will pay only for the power it actually receives. The facility will include four gas turbines and two steam units, designed to enhance efficiency and reliability.
Located near the Grand Faw Port and connected to the new Wafra–Faw interconnection line with Kuwait, the plant will strengthen Iraq’s grid infrastructure and help position Basra as a future regional energy hub.
This agreement follows Iraq’s broader strategy to modernise its power sector. Earlier this month, the government signed a deal with GE Vernova to develop 24 GW of new CCGT capacity and a separate 14 GW agreement with Siemens Energy, underscoring the country’s push to diversify and expand its energy partnerships.

Philippines Approves Grid Connection For 3.5 Gw Mterra Solar-Plus-Storage ProjectThe Energy Regulatory Commission of the Philippines has granted grid connection approval for the 3.5 GW MTerra Solar project.
The approval allows the development of a dedicated point-to-point transmission link to the Luzon grid, a critical step in overcoming infrastructure constraints. The project is being developed by Meralco PowerGen Corporation and its subsidiary SP New Energy Corporation, with UK-based Actis holding a 40 per cent equity stake valued at USD600 million. Engineering and construction are being undertaken by Energy China, PowerChina, and Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation. Located across Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, the project will include 3.5 GW of solar capacity and 4.5 GWh of battery storage. The first phase—1.5 GW solar and 2 GWh storage—is 54 per cent complete, with 90 per cent progress on transmission works as of September 2025. The facility will connect to the 500 kV Nagsaag–San Jose line and San Isidro substation, enhancing grid reliability and renewable integration across Luzon.

Large-scale solar projects face complexities around land acquisition, multi-layered permitting, and transmission readiness. Grid congestion in high-renewable states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan has added further challenges, while curtailments during low-demand periods impact bankability.
At ENGIE, we address these challenges by working closely with state and central utilities, engaging communities early, and embedding digital forecasting and predictive O&M to reduce curtailment risks and enhance grid stability. This approach has helped us deliver projects like the 200 MW Raghanesda plant in Gujarat under tight timelines while maintaining operational resilience.
How can developers and stakeholders effectively navigate regulatory, permitting, and grid-related hurdles?
The key is early, collaborative engagement. Navigating clearances, General Network Access, and Right-of-Way approvals becomes faster and less risky when developers work closely with regulators, DISCOMs, and communities from the start. At ENGIE, our partnerships with SECI, NTPC, NHPC, and state utilities provide both regulatory alignment and financial stability, enabling us to deliver large-scale projects under tight timelines.
Technology is equally important. With renewable energy landscape undergoing a shift towards hybrid and storage integration, rising corporate demand, and increased use of digital tools, how are developers adapting to this evolving environment?
Three trends are defining the next phase of India’s renewable market. First is the rise of hybrids and storage. Round-the-clock solutions are displacing the traditional baseload model, with BESS, solar, and wind integration becoming the anchor for reliable 24/7 supply. ENGIE aims to operate 7 GW of renewable and storage capacities in India by 2030, with 75% of new capacity solar-linked, and every future project designed with storage integration.
Second is the surge in corporate demand. Corporate PPAs and VPPAs are projected to grow from 12 GW in 2023 to 100 GW by 2030, as industries decarbonize supply chains. ENGIE is bringing its global 4.3 GW corporate PPA experience in 2024 to India, tailoring contracts that include storage and providing geographic flexibility through VPPAs.
Third is the digital transformation of renewable operations. AI-enabled forecasting, predictive O&M, and real-time optimization are reducing costs and improving dispatchability. ENGIE’s battery optimization platform already manages 40+ systems globally, improving fleet availability by up to 10%. We are embedding these tools in India to deliver predictable, cost-effective clean energy at scale.

What are the key enablers that will support ENGIE in achieving 7 GW of installed RE capacity by 2030 in India?
India’s renewable energy market is entering a transformative phase, poised for exponential growth driven by a convergence of policy support, technological innovation, and rising corporate climate commitments.
We have invested over €1 billion in the country in the first decade of operations in India (2014-2025), built a portfolio of 2.3 GW across seven states, and signed long-term PPAs with SECI, NTPC, NHPC, GUVNL, and SJVNL. By 2030, we aim to reach 7 GW of installed renewable capacity, with a strong focus on hybrid and storage-backed projects.

Can you share some of ENGIE’s key renewable energy projects in India?
The 200 MW Raghnesda solar power project in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district exemplifies ENGIE’s ability to deliver under pressure. Commissioned in August 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was completed in just 18 months with a zero-infection record—underscoring our uncompromising commitment to health, safety, and operational continuity.
Developed by our wholly owned subsidiary, Electro Solaire Pvt. Ltd. (ESPL), the plant supplies approximately 546 GWh of clean energy annually, offsetting over 387,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. It operates under a 25-year PPA with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL).
The 250 MW Kadapa solar power project spans 5,930 acres in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa Ultra Mega Solar Park, and is one of India’s largest commissioned projects till date. Developed by SolairePro Urja Pvt. Ltd. (SPUPL), it was commissioned in two phases between June 2019 and March 2020. The project uses advanced string inverters to enhance efficiency and system accessibility, and supplies power under a 25-year PPA with NTPC Limited.
Jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, the 75 MW Mirzapur solar plant is a landmark in bilateral renewable cooperation. Spread across 385 acres in Dadar Kalan village, the plant uses over 318,000 solar panels to generate 190 million units of clean electricity annually. Commissioned in March 2018, it remains one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest solar projects.
Located in Rajasthan’s high-irradiation Thar Desert, the 140 MW Bhadla Solar Project was the first in India to deploy water-free robotic cleaning systems. These autonomous robots, remotely controlled via a cloud-based platform, combat heavy dust accumulation from desert storms and are expected to save over 2 billion litres of water over the plant’s 25-year lifecycle.

French distribution network operator Enedis reported 1,507 MW of new PV capacity connected to the grid in the third quarter of 2025, including 82 MW equipped with storage.
Combined with 1,407 MW connected in the first quarter and 1,358 MW in the second, total new capacity reached 4,272 MW in the first nine months of 2025.
The figures reflect a slight year-on-year decline from 2024, when 3,374 MW had already been connected by the same period. Enedis noted that 2024 ended with a record 4.6 GW of new PV capacity added to its network.
As of Sept. 30, 212 MW were connected to the low-voltage grid below 36 kW, including 13 MW with storage. Another 85 MW were connected in the 36 kW to 100 kW range, 611 MW between 100 kW and 250 kW, and 599 MW to the high-voltage grid, of which 69 MW were coupled with storage.
By type of usage, 1,163 MW were for full grid injection, 315 MW for self-consumption with surplus injection, and 29 MW for self-consumption only. France’s cumulative installed PV capacity stood at 24.85 GW at the end of June 2025.

Drc And Hydro-Link Sign Deal To Import 1.2 Gw Of Power From AngolaThe Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US-based energy company Hydro-Link to construct a transmission line that will import 1.2 GW of electricity from Angola.
The project aims to transmit surplus hydropower from Angola to the DRC’s southeastern opperbelt region, where mining and industrial operations are frequently affected by power shortages.
The 400 kV double-circuit transmission line will span approximately 1,150 kilometers. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2029.
This agreement marks the completion of a series of preliminary MoUs needed to advance the project. Hydro-Link initially signed a framework agreement with its Swiss-based partner
Mitrelli in June 2025 (KEI, 26/06/2025), followed by subsequent accords with both Angola and the DRC.
Several key steps remain before construction can begin, including licensing and securing project financing.

Q Energy’S Portfolio Exceeds 1 Gw In FranceAs the market leader in authorised repowering capacity and third-party development in France, Q ENERGY is strengthening its position as a key player in this vital segment of the country's energy transition.
From pioneer to leading player in repowering in France
Many of France's existing wind farms are gradually reaching the end of their economic lifespan after 20 years. The industry estimates that, as of early 2025, almost 5.8 GW could be repowered in France, which means around 3,400 wind turbines would need to be dismantled over the next seven years.
Recognizing this potential early on, Q ENERGY is a pioneer in the field of repowering in France. The company began exploring this field in 2016, defining the end-of-life strategy for its historic Souleilla-Corbières wind farm in Treilles, Occitanie.
Almost ten years later, Q ENERGY has built on this success to establish itself as a major player in the French market. It has entered into five partnerships with various plant owners, covering a project volume of over one gigawatt. Approximately 200 MW of these projects have already been permitted.
Following the completion of the repowering of the Souleilla-Corbières wind farm in 2023, Q ENERGY is currently dismantling and rebuilding two other large-scale projects. While the Cuxac wind farm in Cuxac-Cabardès, Occitanie, is being rebuilt on the same site, the Marsanne wind farm in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is undergoing a more complex transformation, with the turbines being relocated beyond the original wind farm borders.
