The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of UK has announced the results of a clean energy auction, spanning solar, onshore wind, and tidal projects. Around 4.9 GW of solar capacity was awarded across 157 projects, along with 1.3 GW of onshore wind from 28 projects, and 20.9 MW of tidal stream capacity from four projects. The tariffs for onshore wind capacity was £72.24 per MWh, while the tariff for solar projects was £65.23 per MWh, both substantially lower than the £147 per MWh benchmark associated with new gas-fired generation.
Moreover, the awarded projects are expected to unlock around £5 billion in private sector investment. The portfolio includes large-scale infrastructure developments such as the Imerys wind farm in Cornwall, the Sanquahr wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway, and the West Burton solar farm. The auction reportedly includes the largest volume of solar capacity ever contracted in the UK and the most significant onshore wind project approved in England in the past decade.
Moreover, it builds on the offshore wind auction concluded in January 2026, under which 8.4 GW was secured from 12 fixed and floating offshore wind projects. Taken together, the combined auctions have resulted in 201 projects with a total capacity of 14.7 GW, sufficient to supply electricity equivalent to 16 million homes. According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the scale of capacity secured places the UK on track to meet its 2030 clean power targets while expanding domestic renewable energy supply.
