AlstomTo modernize Lyon metro line D, deliver new trains and improve capacity, efficiency and passenger experience across the city SYTRAL Mobilités 300 million euros signed a major contract. This agreement will bring radical changes and improvements to Lyon's busiest metro line.
Under this agreement, Alstom 145 rubber-tired MPL26 trains worth 25 million euros will supply and Automation systems worth 158 million euros This major investment targets the Lyon metro's D line, the city's busiest line with 300.000 passengers daily.
New MPL25 trains with fully automatic and environmentally friendly designThe trains will have a capacity of over 300 passengers. They will offer modern amenities such as wide aisles, large windows, refrigerated ventilation, and real-time passenger displays. The trains will also support multi-unit operation with the current MPL16 models.
Alstom has prioritized sustainability by equipping the trains with electric braking systems that recover energy and reduce emissions. Accessibility has also been significantly improved through wide doors, open passages, and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility.
Alstom to increase safety and control Urbalis driverless signaling solution will put it into practice. This CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) system, increases frequency and reliability even in infrastructures without a platform gate and is compatible with European cybersecurity standards.
The Urbalis system, currently implemented on more than 32 lines in 190 countries, is also being used successfully on Lyon's Metro Line B. The system is expected to reduce service intervals and energy consumption while accommodating increasing passenger numbers.
This comprehensive project involves seven different Alstom sites across France. Train assembly takes place in Valenciennes, while Le Creusot will supply the bogies and Villeurbanne will oversee on-board electronics and cybersecurity. Other sites will provide critical components such as motors, traction systems, maintenance systems, and signaling technology.
Alstom, which employs more than 2.000 experts in digital mobility, is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable transportation with this project. This modernization of Lyon Metro line D underscores France's commitment to innovation and green infrastructure.
The new MPL25 trains are designed to match the current MPL16 trains, ensuring operational compatibility. Technical enhancements, such as cyber-attack protection and energy-efficient systems, align with evolving urban transportation needs.
This modernization project will transform public transport in Lyon, delivering a faster, smarter and more resilient mobility system that meets both current demand and future growth.
