German state railway DB has completed the preliminary planning for the northern access to the Brenner Pass, thereby enabling parliamentary review of the decision on the routing alignment. The plan entails a new double-track line, more than half of which will run through tunnels. According to local media reports, planning and construction costs are estimated at EUR 8.57 billion. In addition, there is a risk provision of approximately EUR 1.11 billion to cover factors such as geological and technical challenges as well as an inflation buffer of around EUR 6.48 billion. A total of 119 key demands were submitted by local municipalities and private individuals in the region. These addressed issues such as noise and vibration protection, routing modifications involving additional tunnel sections as well as a pedestrian and cycle bridge running parallel to the planned crossing of the River Inn. DB InfraGO stated that, upon review, some of these demands aligned neither with the transport objectives of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan nor with current technical approval standards. All key demands will be submitted to the German federal parliament, which will subsequently make the final decision regarding the routing and the regional requests.
