railwayOn 2nd March 2026, the European Commission (EC) and Switzerland signed a package of bilateral agreements, negotiated in 2024, including modernised agreements on land and air transport and rules on the permissibility of state aid in the transport sector. Going forward, the institutional aspects of the seven Single Market agreements will be regulated individually. Switzerland commits to the dynamic adoption of new EU regulations affecting the agreements, with negotiated exceptions and without automatic adoption. In return, it will have a say in the legislation for EU legal acts to be adopted. Furthermore, a dispute settlement procedure and the role of courts such as the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in cases of conflict were established. In rail transport, both sides agreed to extend and potentially expand cooperation with the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), without the ERA becoming responsible for Swiss rail transport. The aim is to simplify the authorisation of rolling stock for cross-border services. Following approval by the EU Council of Ministers, the agreements will be considered by the European Parliament. In Switzerland, the treaties will be submitted to Parliament and subsequently put to a national referendum.
