Comboios de Portugal has signed an agreement with Alstom to extend the supply contract for new trains destined for regional and suburban services. The operation now totals €1.03 billion for the supply of 153 Adessia Stream trains — the largest rolling stock acquisition ever made in the country.

This new stage builds on the initial deal signed in October 2025 (almost two years after the award), which originally called for 117 units worth around €746 million. The revised agreement adds another 36 trains to meet rising passenger demand.

The new fleet comprises 98 trains for the suburban networks of Lisbon, Porto and Cascais, and 55 for regional lines, significantly boosting capacity, reliability and connectivity across the country. The first units are due to arrive in 2029, with an accelerated delivery schedule reflecting the urgency to renew the current fleet.

Alstom has also confirmed the construction of a manufacturing plant in Matosinhos, in the Porto region, covering more than 20,000 m² in collaboration with Portuguese firm DST. The facility will create around 300 direct jobs, reserving 15% for young unemployed people, long-term jobseekers and people with disabilities.

Tailored to the Portuguese network, the trains will feature full step-free access, Wi-Fi, spaces for bicycles and wheelchairs, and 95% recyclability. They also incorporate digital systems to improve energy efficiency and passenger information services.

David Torres, Managing Director of Alstom in Portugal, celebrated the project as a major contribution to more reliable and accessible public transport while bolstering local industry and sustainable mobility. Project Director Bruno Florence emphasised its role in industrial development and job creation.
