New details and early designs have been unveiled for the next generation of metro stations set to transform travel across Sydney’s west and inner west, as construction ramps up on the Sydney Metro West project.

A joint venture comprising Gamuda, Laing O’Rourke and DT Infrastructure has been awarded the contract to deliver six stations at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays and Hunter Street, with site mobilisation now underway. Early works are beginning at several locations, including site establishment, utilities investigations, survey works and traffic management, ahead of major construction later in 2026.

Architecture firms including Bates Smart, SAA Architects, John McAslan + Partners, Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage Architects have been engaged to design the stations, with final designs expected to be confirmed in early 2027. Each station will be tailored to its surrounding precinct, with a focus on accessibility, connectivity and supporting future growth.

Separate contracts have also been awarded for the flagship Hunter Street station in the Sydney CBD, with Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group to begin work following completion of cavern excavation. Contracts for the remaining stations at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont are expected to be announced later this year.

Once complete, the 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West line will double rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, delivering faster and more reliable services, with a target opening date of 2032.
