RailwayHitachi Rail has completed the acquisition of Clever Devices, a U.S. company specializing in smart transportation systems for public transit agencies. The transaction expands Hitachi’s portfolio beyond rail transportation to include digital solutions for multimodal public transit networks, including buses and integrated urban systems.
Hitachi Rail announced the completion of the acquisition of Clever Devices, a U.S. provider of smart transportation systems for public transit operators and authorities.
The acquired company will become part of the Hitachi Group effective July 1, 2026. Clever Devices has estimated 2026 revenue of over 220 million dollars and more than 600 employees, and its customers include 8 of the top 10 public transit agencies in North America.
Through this acquisition, Hitachi Rail is strengthening its position in North America and expanding its business beyond traditional rail into digital solutions for multimodal mobility.
Clever Devices provides Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions used for fleet management, passenger information, and improving operational efficiency in public transportation.
The company’s technologies are used in public mobility systems, including bus and rail transportation. The solutions are designed to improve punctuality, increase the accuracy of information provided to passengers, and optimize fleet operations.
Clever Devices has offices in the United States, Europe, and South America. In addition to its strong presence in North America, the company has also grown in markets such as Brazil, Chile, and Italy.
Hitachi Rail says that Clever Devices’ portfolio, based on onboard data solutions and centralized systems, will complement the HMAX Mobility suite, the digital platform through which the group develops artificial intelligence solutions for public transportation.
The acquisition of Clever Devices is part of Hitachi Rail’s strategy to expand digital and artificial intelligence applications in public transportation.
In the rail sector, the company is already developing HMAX for Rail, a digital rail asset management platform. It connects data from train fleets, signaling systems, and infrastructure to create a digital operational representation of rail systems.
The platform combines sensors, rail expertise, artificial intelligence, and edge computing to improve performance, extend asset lifespans, and optimize costs.
By integrating Clever Devices, Hitachi Rail aims to extend similar capabilities to multimodal networks, where rail, buses, and other components of public transportation must be managed in a more integrated manner.
Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Hitachi Rail, said the transaction represents a key step in the company’s strategy to support the digital transformation of public transportation.
“We are combining Clever Devices’ strong capabilities in intelligent transportation systems with our global presence and the HMAX Mobility suite. Through this acquisition, we are expanding beyond rail, strengthening our presence in North America, and creating a platform to help cities develop more integrated, sustainable, and efficient transportation networks,” said Giuseppe Marino.
As part of the integration, Frank Antonysamy was appointed CEO of Clever Devices. He previously served as Chief Growth Officer at Hitachi Digital, where he led the launch of the group’s industrial artificial intelligence portfolio.
Antonysamy said that the integration into Hitachi Rail will enable Clever Devices to accelerate innovation, expand its global presence, and deliver additional value to transit agencies and passengers through advanced digital mobility solutions.
The acquisition of Clever Devices follows other recent investments by Hitachi Rail in North America.
The company inaugurated a $110 million digital factory in Hagerstown, Maryland, and announced an investment of 30 million Canadian dollars in a new Canadian headquarters.
Hitachi Rail worked on the transaction together with SSIB, the Hitachi Group’s strategic business unit for social innovation. The integration of Clever Devices is expected to create additional opportunities in the mobility sector, including through collaboration with other group companies such as Hitachi Digital, GlobalLogic, and Hitachi Digital Services.
