Stadler’s fleet of FLIRT electric multiple units operating for Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) has collectively travelled more than 300 million kilometres since entering service in 2007.

Over this period, the fleet has helped reduce operational energy costs, contributing to lower transport-related carbon emissions in Hungary.

The 123 FLIRT units currently in service have achieved estimated savings of approximately 250 million EUR in electricity used for traction. This figure represents around one-third of the fleet’s original purchase value. The trains are roughly one-third of the way through their expected service lives, suggesting that further financial and environmental savings are likely over time.

The units are maintained under a full-service agreement, with an availability rate reported at around 96%. On average, each vehicle covers more than 200,000 kilometres annually.

In addition to energy savings, the introduction of modern vehicles has brought operational efficiencies in maintenance and improved passenger comfort.

In environmental terms, the FLIRT fleet’s electric traction system has enabled an estimated reduction of around 2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared with conventional diesel-powered alternatives over the same distance.

We are proud of the milestone achieved, not only because our well-known FLIRT trains offer an outstanding 96% availability rate thanks to the precise maintenance carried out in our country. But also because we can provide the backbone of sustainable rail transport, providing the Hungarian audience with a comfortable and environmentally friendly travel experience.
