Indian Railways is set to boost connectivity, and improve passenger amenities in West Bengal through major infrastructure initiatives. Shri Narendra Modi flagged off the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal Express, providing direct connectivity between West Bengal and the National Capital Region (NCR). Other projects include six redeveloped stations, the Belda–Dantan third rail line and Automatic Block Signalling between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli.

Introduction:

India’s railway network continues to evolve with a focus on modern infrastructure, improved passenger experience, and stronger regional connectivity. In a major development for eastern India, several significant rail projects in West Bengal have been launched and inaugurated during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 March 2026.

These initiatives, undertaken by Indian Railways, represent a major step toward strengthening rail infrastructure in the state. The projects include the launch of a new express train, redevelopment of six railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, commissioning of advanced signalling systems, and expansion of track capacity on important rail corridors.

Together, these developments aim to boost connectivity, improve operational efficiency, enhance passenger amenities, and stimulate economic growth across West Bengal and neighbouring states.

Direct Rail Link from Purulia to Delhi:

One of the most significant announcements during the visit is the flagging off of the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal Express, a new train service connecting West Bengal directly with the national capital region.

For residents of Purulia district, this marks a historic milestone. The district, which previously lacked direct rail connectivity to Delhi, will now benefit from a convenient and direct train service.

Key Benefits of the New Train Service:

The train will also benefit passengers from Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, strengthening regional integration across eastern and northern India.

By connecting smaller districts with major urban centres, the new service supports balanced regional development and improved mobility for millions of travellers.

Six Modernised Stations Inaugurated under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme:

Passenger experience in West Bengal is also set to improve significantly with the inauguration of six redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

The stations upgraded in this phase include:

These stations have been modernised with improved infrastructure and passenger-friendly amenities designed to provide a safer, more comfortable travel experience.

Key Features of Redeveloped Stations:

The redevelopment programme also focuses on preserving local architectural identity. Stations such as Siuri and Barabhum showcase elements of local culture and heritage while incorporating modern design and technology.

For passengers, this means not only improved facilities but also a more welcoming and culturally reflective railway environment.

Belda–Dantan Third Rail Line to Expand Capacity:

Another key project dedicated to the nation is the third railway line between Belda and Dantan, spanning approximately 16 kilometres.

This section lies on a busy railway corridor in Paschim Medinipur district, where train traffic has steadily increased over the years.

Importance of the Third Rail Line:

Adding a third track significantly improves the operational capacity of the corridor. With additional track infrastructure, trains can move more smoothly without delays caused by congestion.

Benefits of the Project:

Improved freight movement will also support local industries and agricultural markets by enabling faster transportation of goods.

Automatic Block Signalling Enhances Safety and Efficiency:

In another important step toward modern railway operations, Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) has been commissioned between the Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli section.

This section spans approximately 55 route kilometres and serves as an important link between West Bengal and Jharkhand.

What is Automatic Block Signalling?:

Automatic Block Signalling divides a railway line into multiple blocks using automated signals. Each block allows only one train at a time, ensuring safe distances between trains.

When a train clears a block, the signal automatically changes to allow the next train to enter.

Key Advantages of ABS:

For passengers, this technology means better train punctuality, reduced delays, and improved reliability.

Massive Expansion of Rail Infrastructure Since 2014:

West Bengal has witnessed substantial railway infrastructure development over the past decade.

Since 2014, nearly 1,400 kilometres of new railway tracks have been laid across the state. This expansion has significantly strengthened the railway network and improved connectivity between cities, towns, and rural areas.

Another major achievement has been the complete electrification of the state’s railway network.

Benefits of Railway Electrification:

Electrification also enables the use of modern electric locomotives that provide better acceleration and higher speeds.

Improved Railway Safety Measures:

Safety has been a key priority for railway authorities. Several initiatives have been implemented to enhance safety across the network. Over 500 rail flyovers and underpasses have been constructed in West Bengal to eliminate level crossings and reduce accident risks.

In addition, the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System is being deployed across railway routes in the state.

Kavach Deployment Progress:

Kavach is designed to prevent train collisions by automatically controlling train speed and applying brakes when necessary.

Large-Scale Station Redevelopment Across the State:

The modernisation of railway stations is a key component of the broader transformation underway in the railway sector. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 101 stations in West Bengal are being redeveloped at an estimated cost of around Rs. 3,600 crore. So far, nine stations have already been completed, with more projects progressing rapidly.

The goal is to create stations that function not just as transport hubs but also as modern urban spaces offering convenience, accessibility, and improved passenger services.

Massive Investments to Strengthen Rail Infrastructure:

The scale of railway investment in West Bengal is unprecedented.

Railway projects worth approximately Rs. 93,000 crore are currently under various stages of implementation in the state.

These projects include:

Budget allocation for railway development in the state has also increased significantly.

Budget Growth:

This sharp increase reflects the strategic importance of the region in India’s rail network.

Strategic Importance of West Bengal in India’s Rail Network:

West Bengal plays a crucial role as a gateway to the northeastern states. Rail corridors passing through the state connect the Northeast with major population centres across northern and western India. Strengthening infrastructure in West Bengal therefore benefits not only the state itself but also millions of passengers and freight operations across the entire region. Improved railway capacity ensures smoother movement of goods such as agricultural produce, industrial products, and essential commodities.

As rail infrastructure improves, the economic integration between eastern and northeastern India is expected to strengthen further.

A Transformational Phase for Indian Railways in Eastern India:

The projects launched during the Prime Minister’s visit collectively represent a significant milestone for railway development in West Bengal.

From modernised stations and expanded track infrastructure to new train services and advanced safety systems, these initiatives aim to create a faster, safer, and more efficient railway network.

The focus on passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and regional connectivity reflects the broader transformation underway across the Indian railway system.

Conclusion:

The launch of new trains, modernised stations, expanded rail lines, and advanced signalling marks a major leap for rail infrastructure in West Bengal. These initiatives by Indian Railways aim to improve connectivity, safety, and passenger comfort while strengthening regional integration and supporting economic growth across eastern India.
