The Belgian government has approved an amendment to the service contract with Infrabel, thereby authorising four new investments in the railway network through 2032. The update concerns the 2023-2032 investment plan, totalling EUR 68.1 million. The largest project, costing EUR 27.5 million, involves upgrades to the four non-electrified lines Ghent – Eeklo, Aalst – Burst, De Pinte – Ronse and Melle – Geraardsbergen to accommodate battery-electric multiple units (BEMU). An additional EUR 21.5 million will be allocated to military mobility measures, including 750 m of track and improved logistics connections. A second track between Mol and Neerpelt is planned at a cost of EUR 15.6 million to increase capacity and operational stability. In addition, EUR 2.6 million will be allocated for the expansion of the Cambron-Casteau station to improve access to the Pairi Daiza tourist destination. Two previously announced projects remain on the agenda but have been postponed. The EUR 87.5 million Ghent – Terneuzen project requires further consultations with the Netherlands. Further coordination regarding the design of the Antwerp-Berchem project costing EUR 37 million is ongoing.
