Train testing is now underway on the newly upgraded Southwest Metro line in Sydney, following major works to convert the 130-year-old T3 Bankstown Line to modern metro standards.

The first test run took place at 4 am on 3 April 2025, with train set TS 28 travelling a 6.5-kilometre stretch from Sydenham to Campsie.

The journey, completed in around five hours at low speed, marks a significant milestone in the conversion project. Once the line is open to passengers next year, the same trip is expected to take just 11 minutes.

This initial test signals the start of a detailed testing and commissioning programme, which will include more than 6,500 hours of testing between Sydenham and Bankstown.

During the early phase, trains will be manually operated at speeds under 25 kilometres per hour while key systems are checked.

These tests include:

The testing will gradually progress to higher speeds and automated operations in line with Sydney Metro’s existing North West Line.

To support this work, there will be several planned service changes on the Bankstown Line and the M1 North West Line, including full and partial line closures and early evening finishes. Transport authorities have encouraged passengers to check real-time travel information and plan ahead.

The South West Metro line is part of the broader Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, which will connect Chatswood to Bankstown via the CBD and is expected to open in 2026.
