Government Plans 1,219 Km Of New And Modernised Railway Lines By 2035

As part of its Serbia 2030 strategy, the Serbian government has announced the construction and modernisation of a total of 1,219 km of railway lines by 2035. The programme includes new lines and the renewal of the core network, focusing on the Belgrade – Nis corridor and cross-border connections to Hungary, Bulgaria, Montenegro, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina. Projects already underway include the lines from Zemun Polje to Nikola Tesla Airport (18.3 km) and to the National Stadium (23.4 km), the 22.5 km Nis – Brestovac section, the 22.5 km Nis freight bypass, the new 16.2 km Sobovica – Luznica – Batocina line, as well as the 86 km Nis – Dimitrovgrad line to the Bulgarian border. By 2030, 289 km are planned, including 162.65 km for the revitalisation of existing lines such as Rimski Sancevi – Sajlovo – Futog, Kragujevac – Kraljevo, and Knjazevac   Nis. For 2026-2035, the government is planning a further 930 km. This primarily includes the modernisation of the Belgrade – Nis line for speeds of 160-200 km/h, encompassing the Resnik – Velika Plana and Velika Plana – Paracin sections. Other projects included Pancevo – Zrenjanin – Subotica, Valjevo – Vrbnica to the Montenegrin border, and Ruma – Sabac – Loznica.
