The Queensland Government is commencing work to upgrade Toowoomba-Athol Road.

The road is a vital freight and commuter corridor which connects Toowoomba with the state’s south-west, carrying a growing mix of urban and rural traffic as the towns of Westbrook and Wyreema expand rapidly.

As part of this upgrade, safety and capacity planning is now underway for key intersections at Wyreema Road and Boundary Street South.

These works build on concerns from residents surrounding the safety and congestions of these areas, which were raised during a consultation on the current upgrade works along Toowoomba-Athol Road, locally known as Anzac Avenue.

The community will have the opportunity to provide further feedback as planning progresses, ensuring local knowledge helps shape practical and long-term solutions.

“We made a commitment to improve Toowoomba-Athol Road, we are getting on with delivering it,” said Brent Mickelberg, State Minister for Transport and Main Roads.

“We want the Toowoomba community to know their feedback matters – it’s not a box-ticking exercise.

“Upgrading this crucial corridor is about delivering safer, more efficient journeys for local families, freight operators and rural communities, while supporting a better lifestyle and a stronger regional economy.”

Construction on the current safety upgrade along Toowoomba-Athol Road is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with this next phase of planning ensuring the network keeps pace with community growth.
