The scheme was announced in June of last year with an estimated cost of Rs 70 billion (Rs 70 bn) under the city decongestion plan. Initial priority stretches include Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple (nine point five km), Chandgi Ram Akhara to Majnu Ka Tilla (two point five km) and Hanuman Temple to DND Flyover (11.5 km). Project planning documents set out that these sections would be taken up first to address bottlenecks on the ring road.

The minister indicated the redeveloped Mahatma Gandhi Road corridor was expected to significantly reduce travel time across the stretches and ease congestion at critical intersections between Mukarba Chowk and the Ashram flyover. After completion the elevated link would connect to the Azadpur flyover near Mukarba Chowk and to the DND road, creating a continuous grade separated connection towards the Ashram flyover in south Delhi. Officials stated that the elevated corridors were designed to enhance urban mobility while working largely within the footprint of the existing carriageway.

Spanning 55 km, the project aims to improve connectivity, decongest major junctions and promote sustainable urban transport through elevated links over the existing ring road. The government said implementation would be phased to minimise disruption and that detailed site inspections and engineering checks would inform construction schedules. Planning continues as authorities complete technical reviews and prepare tendering and execution strategies.
