Road & BridgeInfrastructure delivery firm Graham has completed construction of a new bridge over the A10 in Cambridgeshire.
The bridge provides a traffic-free crossing connecting the growing Waterbeach New Town with Cambridge Science Park and Cambridge city centre.
It was fabricated off site and lifted into position in modular sections, a method that reduced disruption to the A10 during installation.
Spanning 90m across the carriageway, the 150t steel structure features gently sloped, vegetated embankments on each side, providing an accessible crossing for cyclists, pedestrians, wheelchair users, families with pushchairs and horse riders.
It was commissioned by developer Urban&Civic and Graham was appointed principal contractor in early 2025, with construction beginning in February that year.
Located approximately 10km north of Cambridge on the edge of The Fens, Waterbeach New Town is a major development project, designed to deliver up to 4,500 homes and significant community infrastructure on the site of a former RAF base and barracks.
The new bridge design draws on Waterbeach’s aviation heritage, with sculpted edge beams and deck and parapet sections creating a distinctive silhouette against the Cambridgeshire landscape.
The crossing removes the need for residents, commuters and equestrians to cross the A10 at road level, a route previously considered too hazardous for confident active travel.
According to Graham, residents living at the new development can now cycle to Cambridge city centre in around 25 minutes via the upgraded Mere Way, with the route predominantly off road from start to finish.
Graham contracts director Andrew Henry said: “The A10 bridge is a strong example of what civil engineering can do when the brief is genuinely focused on community benefit.
“Fabricating the structure off-site and lifting it into position allowed us to deliver with minimal disruption to one of the region’s busiest roads, and the result is infrastructure that will be used daily by thousands of people for decades to come. It has been a collaborative effort, and the opening is a well-earned milestone for everyone involved.”
Urban&Civic communications and partnerships manager Fiona Reardon-Rose said: “This bridge is a fantastic addition for both current and future residents at Waterbeach, providing a safe and convenient connection across the A10 and making it easier to travel to Cambridge and the surrounding area by foot, bike or horse.

The bridge forms part of a wider package of transport investment at Waterbeach New Town, including new walking and cycling routes, enhanced bus services and a sustainable travel hub providing bike hire and community facilities.
