Work on safety upgrades along the Bruce Highway is accelerating, with 22 new contracts released as part of a major infrastructure program spanning Queensland’s east coast.

The latest package includes five construction procurement and 17 design contracts under the $9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program, jointly funded by the Federal and Queensland governments.

The contracts will support works along priority sections between Gympie and Cairns, building on earlier progress across the program.

Projects include more than 100 kilometres of wide centre line treatments, 50 kilometres of pavement strengthening and overtaking lanes, bridge upgrades in north Queensland, road widening, intersection improvements and resurfacing works.

Dedicated design and construction panels have been established to streamline procurement and support faster delivery.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the program is progressing at pace.

“The release of these contracts marks continued progress in delivering safety improvements along the Bruce Highway,” Minister King said.

“The Australian Government is contributing 80 per cent of funding to this program, recognising the importance of improving safety and reliability on this key national route.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the works are focused on delivering practical outcomes for road users.

“We are progressing a strong pipeline of projects to improve safety for motorists, freight operators and regional communities along the Bruce Highway,” Minister Mickelberg said.

Assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm said the program will deliver long-term benefits.

“These upgrades will improve key sections of the highway and form part of an ongoing investment in safer, more efficient transport connections across regional Queensland,” Assistant Minister Chisholm said.

Assistant Minister for Northern Australia Nita Green said the Bruce Highway plays a vital role in connecting communities.

“These works will help ensure the highway continues to support regional communities and industries while improving safety for those who rely on it every day,” Assistant Minister Green said.
