The playing surface at GMHBA Stadium is on track to be fully replaced ahead of the 2026 AFL season, despite a short pause to works caused by extreme summer heat in late January.
The turf replacement program began in late December following the conclusion of the Melbourne Renegades’ BBL fixtures at the venue. The project involves the complete removal of the existing surface and the installation of new turf, designed to improve durability and performance across the heavily used ground.
Managed by venue operator Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, the resurfacing is scheduled to be completed by mid February, allowing sufficient time for the surface to establish ahead of Geelong’s opening home fixtures of the 2026 AFL season.
KPST confirmed that unusually high temperatures briefly delayed the planned turf installation window, however the overall project timeline has not been impacted. Installation has since resumed, with the trust remaining confident the surface will be ready for match play as scheduled.
During the resurfacing period, GMHBA Stadium has remained a key hub for elite football activity, with Geelong conducting its full pre-season program away from the venue.
Training has been based primarily at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, while the stadium precinct has also hosted pre-season camps and training programs for other AFL and representative squads.
The decision to fully replace the surface follows increased attention on turf performance after wet weather matches during the 2024 AFL season, where sections of the ground showed visible wear. Surface quality and resilience remain a critical focus for GMHBA Stadium, given its year-round usage across AFL, cricket and major events.
GMHBA Stadium continues to evolve as one of Australia’s busiest regional venues, with long-term plans also exploring expanded non-sporting event opportunities, including large-scale concerts. The venue’s broader precinct strategy is aimed at maximising utilisation while maintaining elite playing standards.
Earlier this year, GMHBA Stadium was recognised as Australia’s Best Regional Stadium at the 2025 Stadium Awards on Austadiums, continuing its strong record in the fan-voted honours.
Geelong’s 2026 AFL campaign will commence interstate in early March as part of Opening Round, with the Cats set to return to GMHBA Stadium on March 14 to host Fremantle in Round 1, once the new playing surface is fully established.
