Poliovirus Detected In Wastewater Across Europe

Public health authorities in Finland have reported the detection of poliovirus in wastewater samples, marking the latest in a series of similar findings across Europe. Between September and November 2024, wastewater samples in Spain, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom also tested positive for poliovirus. Despite these detections, no human cases have been reported in Europe.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced the latest findings in a Press Release on the 13th of December. Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom have also reported detection of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in wastewater samples recently. This can spread when people have used an oral polio vaccine. This oral vaccine contains a live, weakened form of the poliovirus. After vaccination, the virus replicates in the intestines and can be found in feces. This poses the risk of spreading in areas with poor sanitation and where people are not vaccinated.

Spain reported the detection of vaccine-derived poliovirus in Catalonia in wastewater samples collected in mid-September from the Barcelona Metropolitan area. Polish public health authorities reported on the 18th of November the presence of the vaccine derived poliovirus in a municipal wastewater sample, collected in Warsaw. In Germany the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was found in wastewater samples from seven different cities. The Finnish public health authorities reported that vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was detected in wastewater samples in Tampere. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom reported that vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 was detected in Leeds, London and West Essex.

To prevent the reintroduction and sustained transmission of poliovirus on the European continent, public health experts stress the importance of high vaccination coverage, particularly among children. The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), administered as part of routine childhood immunization programs, is critical in this effort. Health authorities are urged to review vaccination coverage data, paying particular attention to subnational variations, to identify and address any immunity gaps. They should also ensure that surveillance systems, including those monitoring acute flaccid paralysis and environmental samples, are robust and capable of effectively detecting and responding to poliovirus circulation. Additionally, efforts must be strengthened to improve immunization information systems, enabling the identification of individuals who remain unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

ECDC continues to track the poliovirus situation, providing monthly updates through its communicable disease threat reports. A dedicated dashboard highlights countries where polio remains endemic or where circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks are ongoing.  ECDC is working closely with national authorities in Europe and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe to implement the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, aiming to safeguard the region from poliovirus reintroduction.  Public health authorities emphasize that sustained vigilance and proactive vaccination efforts are essential to keeping Europe polio-free.

Detecting the poliovirus in Europe’s wastewater is not new. A variant of the poliovirus was also detected in June 2022 in sewage samples collected from the London Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. The virus was found during routine surveillance and it involved a new variant of the poliovirus indicating there may have been spread between closely-linked individuals.

Parador Shares Insights On The Rise Of Two-Toned Wood Flooring
Construction Week
Parador Shares Insights On The Rise Of Two-Toned Wood FlooringBlack and white checkerboard floors have been a popular look for decades, but pairing two contrasting shades of wood offers a modern, warm take on the classic style. Discussing this growing trend, Neel Bradham, CEO at global flooring design brand, Parador, explains, “A two-toned wood flooring design – which combines pale and darker wood planks in a single scheme – adds visual interest and depth to a room, creating a sense of contrast and dynamism. Adb Approves $200 Million Loan To Enhance Urban Services In Kolkata.
News Project
Adb Approves $200 Million Loan To Enhance Urban Services In Kolkata. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to develop climate- and disaster-resilient sewerage and drainage infrastructure in Kolkata, aiming to enhance urban livability and reduce flood risks. The investment is part of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sustainability, Hygiene, and Resilience (Sector) Project, which seeks to improve public health and living conditions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children, ADB said in a statement. Kolkata, one of India’s most densely populated cities, struggles with inadequate drainage and sewerage systems, leading to urban flooding and unsanitary conditions. These challenges are worsening due to the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall linked to climate change, ADB noted. To address these issues, the project will include the construction of 84 kilometers of trunk and secondary sewerage and drainage pipelines, 176 kilometers of lateral pipelines extending to customer connections, and 50,000 new household sewer connections. Additionally, it will establish a new sewage treatment plant and five pumping stations. Once completed, the initiative is expected to benefit over 277,000 residents, significantly improving sanitation and flood resilience in the city.

Orb Energy Plans To Raise $50 Million For Expansion.
News Project
Orb Energy Plans To Raise $50 Million For Expansion.Bengaluru-based Orb Energy is planning to raise $50 million (₹435 crore) to expand its installed solar power capacity, focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The company, which has already installed over 300 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and sold around 1.7 lakh systems, is one of the leading domestic players in the rooftop solar segment. “We aim to raise $20 million through equity and $30 million via debt. Hopefully, this will be our final fundraising round, Series D, which we expect to close by April-May,” said Damian Miller, Co-founder and CEO of Orb Energy. Orb Energy’s first 35 MW solar park for SMEs in Arsikere, Karnataka, is already sold out and will be fully commissioned this year. The company is now investing in a 50 MW solar park in Karnataka, with another planned for Gulbarga, where land procurement has begun. The common infrastructure for this project is expected to be ready by July-August 2025. Looking ahead, Orb Energy plans to add 300 MW of new capacity, in addition to the 100 MW currently in the pipeline. The company is eyeing Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka for further expansion. “We want to enter Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh immediately, where we already have a strong rooftop solar customer base. We are also raising funds for in-house financing, which has been a key part of our growth strategy,” Miller added. Focus on SMEs and Solar Financing Since its inception in 2007, Orb Energy has focused on SMEs, recognizing a gap in power purchase agreements (PPAs) for smaller businesses. “The SME market was largely ignored because many lack a BBB+ credit rating, which is typically required for PPAs. But since we had already built an extensive network through our off-grid solutions, we saw an opportunity to serve SMEs,” Miller explained. To address financing challenges, Orb Energy developed a full-stack solar solution, including system design, installation, servicing, and financing. “We launched this model seven years ago and even navigated through COVID with minimal risk. Less than 1% of our portfolio had overdue payments beyond 90 days during the pandemic. That’s how strong the SME market is for solar,” Miller emphasized. With fresh capital, Orb Energy aims to accelerate its solar park development and SME financing, further strengthening its position in India’s clean energy sector.
