Poliovirus Detected In Wastewater Across Europe

Public health authorities in Finland have reported the detection of poliovirus in wastewater samples, marking the latest in a series of similar findings across Europe. Between September and November 2024, wastewater samples in Spain, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom also tested positive for poliovirus. Despite these detections, no human cases have been reported in Europe.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced the latest findings in a Press Release on the 13th of December. Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom have also reported detection of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in wastewater samples recently. This can spread when people have used an oral polio vaccine. This oral vaccine contains a live, weakened form of the poliovirus. After vaccination, the virus replicates in the intestines and can be found in feces. This poses the risk of spreading in areas with poor sanitation and where people are not vaccinated.

Spain reported the detection of vaccine-derived poliovirus in Catalonia in wastewater samples collected in mid-September from the Barcelona Metropolitan area. Polish public health authorities reported on the 18th of November the presence of the vaccine derived poliovirus in a municipal wastewater sample, collected in Warsaw. In Germany the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was found in wastewater samples from seven different cities. The Finnish public health authorities reported that vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was detected in wastewater samples in Tampere. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom reported that vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 was detected in Leeds, London and West Essex.

To prevent the reintroduction and sustained transmission of poliovirus on the European continent, public health experts stress the importance of high vaccination coverage, particularly among children. The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), administered as part of routine childhood immunization programs, is critical in this effort. Health authorities are urged to review vaccination coverage data, paying particular attention to subnational variations, to identify and address any immunity gaps. They should also ensure that surveillance systems, including those monitoring acute flaccid paralysis and environmental samples, are robust and capable of effectively detecting and responding to poliovirus circulation. Additionally, efforts must be strengthened to improve immunization information systems, enabling the identification of individuals who remain unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

ECDC continues to track the poliovirus situation, providing monthly updates through its communicable disease threat reports. A dedicated dashboard highlights countries where polio remains endemic or where circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks are ongoing.  ECDC is working closely with national authorities in Europe and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe to implement the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, aiming to safeguard the region from poliovirus reintroduction.  Public health authorities emphasize that sustained vigilance and proactive vaccination efforts are essential to keeping Europe polio-free.

Detecting the poliovirus in Europe’s wastewater is not new. A variant of the poliovirus was also detected in June 2022 in sewage samples collected from the London Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. The virus was found during routine surveillance and it involved a new variant of the poliovirus indicating there may have been spread between closely-linked individuals.

Jica Extends ₹3,065 Crore Oda Loan For Chennai'S Second Seawater Desalination Plant.
News Project
Jica Extends ₹3,065 Crore Oda Loan For Chennai'S Second Seawater Desalination Plant.Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan agreement worth 52,556 million Japanese Yen (approximately ₹3,065 crore) to support the construction of the Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant (II) in Tamil Nadu. The Official Development Assistance (ODA) agreement was signed by Manisha Sinha, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India. The project includes the construction of a 400 MLD desalination plant along with water transmission and distribution infrastructure such as pumping stations, reservoirs, and pipelines. It also covers consulting services for design, construction supervision, operational management support, and public awareness initiatives. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is responsible for executing the project, which aims to bolster Chennai’s water supply infrastructure to meet the growing demand. With a current population of approximately 8.69 million (as per the 2011 census), the Chennai Metropolitan Area is expected to exceed 15 million by 2035, further straining existing water resources. The city’s water demand already surpasses 1,400 million litres per day (MLD), creating a supply gap that affects both residents and industries, including over 360 Japanese companies operating in the region. Given Chennai’s limited surface and groundwater availability, seawater desalination has been prioritized as a stable and sustainable solution to secure long-term water supply. The project is expected to improve water availability, enhance living conditions, and create a more attractive investment environment in the region. Takuro, Chief Representative of the JICA India Office, emphasized JICA’s commitment to supporting Chennai’s efforts to establish a resilient and sustainable water supply system. “Chennai has long faced challenges in securing sustainable water sources due to rapid urbanization and climate-related factors. Through this project, JICA is committed to supporting the city’s efforts to ensure a better quality of life for residents and a more favorable business environment,” he said. This initiative aligns with previous and ongoing international aid efforts, including the Asian Development Bank’s Tamil Nadu Urban Flagship Investment Program and the World Bank’s Chennai City Partnership Program, both of which focus on enhancing urban water infrastructure.

Carlton Al Moaibed: The Rise Of Hospitality In Khobar
Construction Week
Carlton Al Moaibed: The Rise Of Hospitality In KhobarAl Khobar’s skyline is subtly redrawing itself, trading industrial silhouettes for the elegant lines of design-led hotels. This isn’t mere gentrification; it’s a considered evolution, a response to a discerning global traveller now casting their gaze eastwards. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 is not just a blueprint; it’s a catalyst, transforming urban landscapes and aspirations alike. For dwp, this evolution has been a compelling canvas. We understand the delicate dance between heritage and aspiration, between authenticity and international standards. This is precisely what drew us to the 5 Star Carlton Al Moaibed Hotel, now part of the Vignette Collection by IHG, a name whispered with respect in Khobar for generations. A family-owned institution, they envisioned not just a hotel, but a landmark – a quiet statement of Khobar’s burgeoning sophistication. The Carlton Al Moaibed project became a study in considered design. Working in close collaboration with the family, dwp crafted a spatial narrative that speaks of understated luxury and discreet charm. Materials were selected for their tactile quality and timeless appeal. Spaces were conceived for flow and intuitive experience. The result? A hotel that feels both grounded in its location and effortlessly international in its appeal. The Carlton Al Moaibed isn’t merely a hotel; it’s a quiet harbinger. It signals Khobar’s readiness for a new chapter, one defined by curated experiences and considered aesthetics. It’s a testament to the power of design to shape not just buildings, but perceptions. Al Khobar’s next chapter is being written in light and space, and dwp is poised to interpret the script.

Wastewater Treatment: The Growing Demand For Decentralized Stps And Plug & Play Solutions
WATER NEWS EUROPE
Wastewater Treatment: The Growing Demand For Decentralized Stps And Plug & Play Solutions– Sponsored Story – Sigmadaf, a manufacturer of decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), has experienced explosive growth over the past five years. In the wastewater treatment market, there is an increasing demand for decentralized STPs and Plug & Play solutions. “More and more clients are looking for systems that do not require extensive infrastructure or depend on scarce skilled labour. Because we control the entire production chain, we can also guarantee fast delivery of our STPs,” says Oscar Mallola, Export Manager at Sigmadaf. The Sigma Group was founded nearly 30 years ago and consists of three divisions. Aquasigma, which provides turn-key solutions for industrial wastewater treatment (1). Sigma Biodigestech which offers solutions for the treatment and valorisation of digestate generated by biodigestion plants on livestock farms (2). And Sigmadaf, which manufactures a complete range of Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), decentralized STPs (MBR) and filter presses (3). Sigmadaf began its operations in 1994 in Girona, Spain. Since then, the company has built hundreds of DAF-installations across a wide range of industrial sectors on all five continents. Today, Sigma Group operates from three manufacturing locations in Girona, and there is a new 5000m2 facility under construction where its STPs are produced. “We are working hard to build a solid reputation. The key to achieving this is delivering high-quality products and providing reliable after-sales support. We believe that after-sales service is just as important as the sale itself. Our motto is: ‘Any unit we sell must be the right unit,'” explains Oscar Mallola. Because of its strong focus on after-sales service, Sigmadaf has established several offices worldwide. “Fifteen years ago, we opened an office in Mexico with its own technical staff, all of whom are trained in Girona. A locally based office allows us to provide better guarantees and faster support, which in turn gives our clients more confidence.” A few years ago, Sigmadaf’s Plug & Play solutions were primarily used for treating sewage from workers in agricultural projects or mining locations. “Most of our clients used our Sewage Treatment Plants for three years before relocating them to another site. Our decentralized STPs can treat wastewater for populations ranging from 200 to 1,000 people. Now, we are seeing increased demand from hotels and apartment complexes. In the USA there is a growing market for temporary sewage treatment for newly built apartments until permanent infrastructure is established.” Sigmadaf’s STPs are shipped to clients worldwide. “Our stainless-steel units are smaller than a shipping container, which keeps transportation costs relatively low. We use high-quality membranes to prevent saturation. Some clients are unaware of the significant differences between high-quality and cheaper membranes. Replacing membranes can be costly, reduce the operational lifespan of the unit, and lead to unwanted environmental wastewater discharges. We make it a priority to educate our clients on how our technology stands out from that of our competitors. In the past, we noticed that some clients simply opted for the lowest price. This was partly because wastewater treatment was seen as a cost with no return. However, due to drought and water scarcity we are now seeing a shift in this mindset. More and more industrial clients are willing to reuse wastewater.” Sigmadaf has a strong presence in Australia, where it sells a significant number of STPs. “Our clients there appreciate our product quality and guarantees. We primarily sell Membrane Bioreactors (MBR) because they are ideal for Plug & Play solutions. We also manufacture Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), but this is a completely different technology. Some clients visit our manufacturing facilities in Girona to see firsthand how our units are produced. Observing our complete control over the production chain reassures them of our ability to guarantee delivery times. This assurance is becoming increasingly important, especially given the current shortage of skilled welders and plumbers. By choosing our Plug & Play solutions, clients eliminate the need to find skilled labour themselves, and they can simply order the units they require.” Building a Sewage Treatment Plant for clients begins with defining objectives. “Our clients specify the required effluent parameters, and we deliver a system that meets those specifications. Without clear parameters, we do not proceed with sales.” Over the past five years, Sigmadaf has seen rapid expansion, with its workforce growing from five to 50 employees. “Our growth strategy is centred on human resources,” says Mallola. “Taking on too much work would compromise product quality and a good workplace atmosphere. We have worked hard to build our reputation, and we are mindful of our limits. We are not getting too big for our boots; we know what we can handle.”

Jadestone Energy: Submission Of Field Development Plan For Vietnam Assets
NS ENERGY
Jadestone Energy: Submission Of Field Development Plan For Vietnam AssetsJadestone Energy plc (AIM:JSE) (the “Company” and together with its subsidiaries, “Jadestone” or the “Group”), an independent upstream production and development company focused on the Asia-Pacific region, announces that it has submitted a field development plan (“FDP”) for the Nam Du/U Minh (“NDUM”) discoveries offshore southwest Vietnam to Petrovietnam, commencing the regulatory approval process. The FDP sets out a phased development concept for NDUM, which is based on unmanned wellhead platforms at each of the Nam Du and U Minh fields tied back to an FPSO, with processed gas exported onshore through a 34 km pipeline tied into an existing trunkline to the Ca Mau industrial complex in southwest Vietnam. The first phase of the FDP envisages the Nam Du field initially being brought onstream, accelerating first gas to Vietnam and revenues to Jadestone to help fund the development of U Minh production in the second phase. The FDP contemplates drilling two wells from each platform to support a plateau rate of 80MMscf/d. Following receipt of Petrovietnam’s endorsement, the FDP will be considered for approval by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The next steps in the development process include finalising the gas sales agreement, which is well advanced with the gas buyer, to formalise the heads of terms agreed in January 2024. A financing plan, which could involve bringing in development partners, would be progressed in parallel with major contract tenders (including the EPCI contract and FPSO), with both finalised prior to project FID and any significant expenditure. The Nam Du and U Minh fields are located offshore southwest Vietnam in shallow waters of 50-60 meters. The fields are located on the Block 46/07 and Block 51 PSCs respectively, which Jadestone operates with 100% working interests. Nam Du and U Minh have been independently assessed to contain gross aggregate 2C resources of 171.3 Bscf of gas and 1.6 MMbbls of liquids. Adel Chaouch, Executive Chairman of Jadestone, commented: “Our Vietnam gas assets are fundamental to Jadestone’s investment case and are central to our strategic aim of being the leading Asia-Pacific upstream independent. Development of the discovered resource base will drive significant organic growth and value creation for our shareholders, with further material upside possible from additional prospects and leads across our licence position. Submission of an FDP is therefore a major milestone in the commercialization of the Nam Du/U Minh discoveries and demonstrates real momentum in our engagement with the Vietnam government. The development of Nam Du/U Minh would be a win-win for both Jadestone and Vietnam, delivering affordable gas supplies with a lower GHG intensity to the southwest of the country, creating and sustaining jobs and economic benefits.” Give your business an edge with our leading industry insights.

Ntt Data India To Invest $500 Million In Ai Platforms, Data Centers, And Sovereign Cloud.NTT Data India has announced a $500 million investment over the next 12-18 months to accelerate AI platform development, expand data center capacity, enhance sub-sea cable infrastructure, and address the financial sector’s demand for sovereign cloud solutions. The company has already invested around $3 billion in India since 2007 through data center development and acquisitions. “A major portion of this new investment will go into data centers, but we are also focused on building campuses, expanding our workforce, and upgrading our innovation center in Bengaluru,” said Avinash Joshi, CEO of NTT Data India. He added that financial institutions increasingly require on-premises sovereign cloud solutions for data security and compliance. India currently hosts 16 NTT data center campuses, with three new locations set to open in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Navi Mumbai. The company’s total installed capacity of 290 MW for IT facilities will expand by an additional 210 MW over the next two to three years. On submarine cable infrastructure, NTT Data is set to commission an expansion of its Malaysia, India, Singapore Transit (MIST) submarine cable system by June 2025. Spanning 8,100 km, the cable can carry over 200 terabits per second (Tbps), connecting Malaysia, India, Singapore, and Thailand. Joshi emphasized the increasing importance of undersea cables in AI and data center connectivity, stating, “Right now, there is no more efficient technology than sea cables for intercontinental connectivity.” As part of its innovation drive, NTT Data is upgrading its Bengaluru innovation center to focus on AI, digital twin, and quantum computing projects. The company is also advancing its Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN), an All-Photonics Network (APN) technology aimed at interconnecting data centers in the Mumbai region. Expected to be available globally by 2030, IOWN will enable high-performance data transmission at lower costs. Akira Shimada, President and CEO of NTT, emphasized India’s strategic role in the company’s global plans, ranking among its top 10 revenue-generating markets, with expectations to enter the top five soon. NTT is making a global investment of $59 billion from FY23 to FY27 across growth areas, including AI and data centers. “We are committed to delivering our integrated full-stack proposition to our clients, spanning data centers, networks, applications, cloud, security, and AI solutions,” Shimada said.
