Asia’s middle distillates spot deals emerged on the trading window for the first time in more than a week, with paper market activity gaining momentum as well – though overall market sentiment turned bearish.
The weak east-west arbitrage window in the past week, in addition to talks of swing supplies coming back to Asia, weighed on markets today, two trade sources said.
The front-month east-west price spreads slipped to around $22 per metric ton, the narrowest level in two months.
Spot refiner sales for 10ppm sulphur gasoil slipped slightly back into discounted levels, multiple trade sources said, in comparison with last week’s flat to small premiums.
Jet fuel markets were overall weaker than expected as travel activities have been dismal globally, one trade source said, adding that U.S. demand for the aviation fuel is lower than expected.
“Global flight activity declines in US, China, and broader Asia region in March so far,” said JP Morgan analysts in a client note.
“In Asia, Chinese flights have eased to 104% of their 2019 volumes in March so far, after the conclusion of the New Year holidays, while flights in Asia excluding China have dipped below 100% of 2019 levels for the first time in three months,” they added.
Regional demand remains muted for now, despite ongoing cold snaps in some northeast Asian regions, though a pick-up could be imminent in end-March on some regional holidays.
Refining margins slipped to below $14 a barrel for the first time since end-January, as a reflection of the persistent weakness in gasoil markets and crude gains.

Regrade however narrowed slightly to a discount of 85 cents a barrel.

INVENTORIES
– U.S. crude oil stockpiles rose and fuel inventories fell last week as seasonal refinery maintenance season ticked along, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday.
– Singapore’s middle distillates inventories slipped to below 11 million barrels despite declining net exports of both diesel and jet fuel, official data showed on Thursday.

– Russia’s seaborne oil product exports in February fell 7.5% from January to 8.72 million metric tons, data from industry sources and Reuters calculations showed.
– India’s crude oil imports from Latin America and Africa rose marginally in February as refiners turned to alternative sources, fearing a loss of Russian oil supplies caused by tighter U.S. sanctions, data from trade sources shows.
– Global oil supply could exceed demand by around 600,000 barrels per day this year, the International Energy Agency said in a monthly oil market report on Thursday, after a downward revision to its 2025 demand growth forecast.
