Turkey’s thermal coal imports in February largely remained similar on month, after rising in December, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute, as buyers continued to buy coal due to low prices, according to market sources.
In February, Turkey imported 3.3 million mt of coal from Russia, Colombia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, the US, and Iran cumulatively, the TUIK data published April 2 showed.
Turkey’s February thermal coal import volumes have increased 70% year over year, the data showed.
Russia, the leading supplier of thermal coal to Turkey, showed slight fall in its exports to Turkey month over month after rising in both December and January, as most of the buyers remained on sidelined with ample stocks, according to market participants.
Turkey imported 2.6 million mt of Russian thermal coal in February, down 8% on the month but up 89% on the year, the TUIK data showed. In January, Russia exported 2.8 million mt of thermal coal to Turkey.
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed CIF Med 45,000 mt 6,000 kcal/kg NAR, Russian origin only, coal at an average of $90.50/mt in February, down from January’s average of $96.60/mt.
The drop in prices for Russian coal delivered to Turkey, along with sufficient availability of cargoes, prompted cement producers in Turkey to prefer thermal coal instead of petcoke, according to market participants.
South African thermal coal imports to Turkey remained largely unchanged month on month at 40,080 mt in February, and up 12% year on year, the TUIK data showed.
Meanwhile, Colombia’s thermal coal exports to Turkey sharply increased on month, rising 195% to 493,570 mt, and 29% year over year, the TUIK data showed.
Platts assessed CIF Med 75,000 mt 6,000 kcal/kg NAR, non-Russian origin, coal prices at an average of $96.50/mt in February, up from the average of $93/mt in January.
Also, turkey imported US and Iran thermal coal with total imports of 41,188 mt in February.
