BW ESS and Ibersun have formed a joint venture to develop utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Spain. The joint venture of the companies is targeting greenfield, four-hour duration assets. It will progress with an initial 2.2 GW pipeline of eight projects.
The two companies will have equal ownership in the projects. Ready-to-Build status for the projects is expected to be achieved within two years. Furthermore, the partners anticipate pursuing a diverse range of revenue generation strategies.
Earlier in May 2025, BW ESS secured debt financing for the 100 MW/331 MWh Bramley battery energy storage system asset in Bramley, Hampshire. Under this agreement, the Australian bank Westpac and UOB will contribute 50 per cent each for the debt facility. The BESS project benefits from a market-first seven-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe. It was inaugurated in February 2025.
