Vietnam, Hai Phong: GE Vernova plans to invest around 200 M in a new transformer manufacturing facility in Hai Phong, Vietnam, expanding its global capacity to support rising demand for electrification infrastructure.

The company announced the plan during its Energy of Change Summit held in Hanoi on 10 March. The proposed facility will produce large power transformers mainly used in HVDC projects.

The new plant will complement GE Vernova’s existing HVDC transformer manufacturing sites in Stafford in the UK and India. HVDC technology allows electricity to be transmitted efficiently over long distances and helps power systems handle increasing demand more reliably.

The Hai Phong facility will be developed in phases, with full operations expected by 2028, subject to regulatory approvals. Once operational, the plant is expected to manufacture key power equipment at scale to support the company’s global project pipeline and growing regional demand.

During the summit, GE Vernova also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to explore potential cooperation on HVDC technology in line with Vietnam’s national power development plan. The partnership will study how HVDC solutions could support the expansion of the country’s transmission network.

GE Vernova currently contributes equipment that provides up to 30 % of Vietnam’s electricity. The company employs more than 1,100 people across nine locations in the country and operates facilities including the Phu My repair facility and Dung Quat HRSG manufacturing plant.
