
Romanian state railway CFR has awarded two planning and construction contracts for the renovation of the Craiova – Drobeta-Turnu Severin – Caransebes line to the TrackWorks consortium, consisting of the Greek construction company Terna and Alstom. The two lots for the Craiova – Filiasi and Filiasi – Igiroasa sections cover a total of 83 km and have a total volume of EUR 992.6 million. The 226 km line is part of the European TEN-T Rhine–Danube transport corridor and the main Bucharest – Timisoara corridor. The project includes the construction of a double track and an increase in speeds to 160 km/h for passenger rail transport and 120 km/h for rail freight transport, 22.5 t axle load, the renewal of electrification to 25 kV AC, and the installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) at Level 2. Planning will take 12 months, and implementation is scheduled to take 60 months.
