The Office of the Commissioner for the Atlantic Corridor, the Railway Technology Platform – Spanish Railways Foundation (PTFE‑FFE), and the Spanish Logistics Centre (CEL) have launched a working group aimed at strengthening the role of rail in freight transport.
In 2024, the latest year with official data, rail’s modal share in land transport fell to 3.33% (9,349 million tonne‑km), down from 3.4% in 2023 and far below road’s 96.67%, according to INE and Mitma figures.
This downward trend highlights the issue the initiative seeks to tackle through more efficient intermodality.
The working table has been set up as a space for technical collaboration among administrations, operators, manufacturers, and users. The signing ceremony took place at the Palacio de Fernán Núñez, headquarters of the Spanish Railways Foundation.
The group brings together representatives from across the value chain, including ADIF, Renfe, Renfe Mercancías, Alstom, Abbott, Fundación Valenciaport, FAPROVE, AEFP, CEL, CAPSA, Nestlé Iberia, Tendam, and the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Through this move, the founding entities are establishing a permanent platform to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between public and private players within the rail ecosystem.
