railwayA new artistic roundel celebrating local wildlife has been installed at Westerfield railway station.
The roundel, which shows pollinators found at the station, was officially unveiled on 28 January during an event attended by parish councillors and local residents.
Also in attendance were volunteer station adopters Sandy Burn and Yvonne Maynard, Thalia Woodgate, Community Rail Officer for the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership (ESLCRP), and the mosaic’s creator, artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding.
The artwork was funded by the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership, and the station adopters who raised money through their popular ‘Bee Fete’, held during the summer.
The roundel was handcrafted by Anne Schwegmann-Fielding in her workshop in Wrabness, using broken pieces of crockery and tiles to create a vibrant and textured mosaic. The installation was completed by Greater Anglia.
Greater Anglia said artwork reflected the rich biodiversity at Westerfield station, where volunteers had transformed the platforms into thriving wildlife gardens that support pollinators and other species.
Thalia Woodgate, Community Rail Officer for the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership, said: “The roundel is absolutely beautiful and perfectly reflects Westerfield station’s wildlife-friendly credentials. It is a wonderful way to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the station volunteers, who have transformed the platforms into stunning wildlife gardens that benefit both nature and passengers.”
Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Engagement Manager, added: “The roundel looks wonderful in situ and really adds to the attractive and welcoming atmosphere that makes Westerfield such a special station on the East Suffolk Lines. Greater Anglia is very grateful to everyone involved in bringing this fantastic community-led project to life.”
