Metro Railway, Kolkata recommissioned an energy-efficient BHEL rake equipped with an indigenously developed DC-DC Chopper Propulsion System. The upgrade enables CBTC compatibility, reduces energy consumption, and significantly lowers carbon emissions. The 10th Dalian rake was also introduced, enhancing passenger comfort and accessibility.
Introduction:
Metro Railway, Kolkata has added another landmark achievement to its 41-year-old legacy with the recommissioning of an energy-efficient BHEL rake and the introduction of the 10th Dalian rake for commercial service. The programme was held at Noapara Carshed on January 30, 2026, highlighting the organisation’s focus on sustainability, indigenous innovation, and passenger-centric development.
Recommissioning of Energy-Efficient BHEL Rake:
The recommissioned BHEL rake, numbered MR-301, has been upgraded with an advanced IGBT-based DC-DC Chopper Propulsion System. Earlier, this air-conditioned rake lacked regenerative capability and was not compatible with the modern Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system.
With the new propulsion system installed, the rake can now operate seamlessly under CBTC signalling, leading to improved operational efficiency, enhanced safety, and better overall performance.
First-of-Its-Kind Indigenous Technological Achievement:
This upgrade marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time such a propulsion system for Metro rakes has been developed entirely within India. The 100 percent indigenous design strongly aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The new system replaces failure-prone components, improving reliability and ensuring smoother and more dependable services for commuters.
Significant Energy and Environmental Benefits:
The financial and environmental gains from the upgraded propulsion system are substantial:
Once all remaining BHEL rakes are fitted with the improved system, Metro Railway is expected to:
Collaboration with IIT Kharagpur:
The successful execution of this technically complex project was achieved under the guidance of professors from IIT Kharagpur, in close coordination with Metro Railway’s Rolling Stock officials. Their collaboration ensured the system met operational requirements while maintaining high safety and efficiency standards.
Appreciation from Metro Railway Leadership:
Shri Subhransu S. Mishra, General Manager of Metro Railway, congratulated all officials and staff associated with the project for its successful implementation. He also expressed his appreciation to the professors of IIT Kharagpur for their contribution to this significant indigenous technological breakthrough.
Flagging Off of the 10th Dalian Rake:
Alongside the recommissioning of the BHEL rake, the General Manager also flagged off the 10th Dalian rake, MR-503, for commercial service. This rake features user-friendly amenities, with special emphasis on accessibility for differently abled passengers and senior citizens, reinforcing Metro Railway’s commitment to inclusive and comfortable travel.
Dignitaries Present at the Event:
The programme was attended by the President of MRWWO, along with other office bearers and members. The occasion marked a significant step forward in Metro Railway Kolkata’s ongoing journey toward modernization, sustainability, and improved passenger services.
Conclusion:
The recommissioning of the energy-efficient BHEL rake and induction of the 10th Dalian rake underscore Metro Railway Kolkata’s push toward sustainability, indigenous innovation, and inclusive mobility. These initiatives promise reduced energy costs, lower carbon emissions, and enhanced passenger comfort, setting new benchmarks for urban mass transit systems in India.
