Maha Metro has begun track-laying work on Reach 2A of Nagpur Metro Phase-2, connecting Automotive Square to Lekha Nagar. Using advanced Flash Butt Welding technology, the project aims to accelerate metro completion. The extension will enhance connectivity for over a million residents, linking Nagpur with its satellite towns and industrial hubs.
Introduction:
Nagpur Metro’s Phase-2 is witnessing a major milestone as Maha Metro has officially commenced track-laying work on Reach 2A, stretching from Automotive Square to Lekha Nagar. The work marks a significant step in accelerating the completion of the Orange Line extension, which is expected to boost urban mobility in the city and surrounding areas.
A key highlight of this operation was the successful lifting and installation of a Flash Butt Welding (FBW) machine on the elevated viaduct using a 130-metric-ton capacity crane. The operation was carried out during night hours to minimize traffic disruption, ensuring smooth execution without affecting commuters.
Advanced Rail Welding for Faster Progress:
The Flash Butt Welding process is central to this track-laying phase. Individual 18-meter rails are joined to form Continuous Welded Rails (CWR) using electrical resistance and hydraulic pressure, eliminating the need for additional filler material.
So far, around 700 welds have been completed successfully, significantly speeding up the installation of ballastless tracks along the elevated corridor. This achievement confirms that the civil structures and viaducts in this section are fully ready for track installation, paving the way for timely project completion.
Project Details and Features of Phase-2:
Phase-2 of Nagpur Metro has been designed with modern infrastructure to ensure high-speed and efficient commuting. Key features include:
Connectivity and Regional Benefits:
Reach 2A spans 6.5 km, connecting Automotive Square to Lekha Nagar, while the broader Phase-2 extension to Kanhan River will cover 13 km, linking Nagpur to satellite towns. This corridor will significantly benefit more than 10 lakh residents, providing faster commuting to Nagpur for work, education, and industrial activities.
The metro route passes through strategic locations such as Kamptee, Butibori industrial estate, Hingna, and Kapsi, facilitating access to key workplaces. Butibori alone houses around 750 industrial units employing 50,000 people, who will now enjoy seamless connectivity. Additionally, the metro will ease travel for coal mine workers and residents of fast-growing towns along the route.
Conclusion:
The commencement of track-laying on Reach 2A marks a crucial step in the rapid development of Nagpur Metro Phase-2. With advanced technology, modern infrastructure, and improved regional connectivity, the project promises to transform urban commuting, reduce travel time, and support economic growth in Nagpur and its satellite towns.
