Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently announced that investments worth approximately ₹3 lakh crore have been planned to develop world-class shipbuilding clusters under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

Speaking at the defence and maritime dialogue “Sagar Sankalp – Reclaiming India’s Maritime Glory”, Singh said strengthening domestic capabilities in shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure is essential to boost India’s strategic and economic interests.

The event was jointly organised by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited and a private media organisation in Kolkata.

Reiterating the importance of self-reliance, Singh said it remains the only viable path for India to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving global environment where “abnormality has become the new normal.”

He also warned that geopolitical tensions could disrupt global energy supplies. According to Singh, disturbances in West Asia following the US-Israel-Iran conflict could directly impact the supply of oil and gas due to disruptions in global supply chains.
