WaterKnowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited (KMEW) has announced that a consortium comprising its subsidiary, Knowledge Shipyard Private Limited (KSPL), as the lead partner, and KMEW has secured a contract from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for the design, construction, supply, testing and commissioning of 10 hybrid electric passenger ferries.
The contract, awarded by the IWAI under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, is valued at ₹66.11 crore, including applicable taxes. Of the total contract value, ₹65.52 crore is allocated for the construction of the ferries, while ₹0.59 crore covers maintenance and support services.
The project involves the construction of 10 hybrid electric ferries, each with a capacity to carry 20 passengers. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered within 10 months, followed by a 60-month maintenance and support period.
The order marks a significant milestone for the KMEW Group and represents the first external commercial shipbuilding contract secured by Knowledge Shipyard Private Limited. The company said the achievement validates its investments in developing a dedicated and scalable shipbuilding platform.
Under the contract, the consortium will undertake detailed vessel engineering, obtain class approvals, construct the ferries, integrate hybrid-electric propulsion systems, install navigation and safety equipment, and carry out testing, commissioning and final delivery in accordance with IWAI's technical and regulatory requirements.
KMEW said the project strengthens its transition from a marine services and vessel operations company into an integrated maritime infrastructure and shipbuilding enterprise. The order also aligns with the Government of India's efforts to promote sustainable inland water transport through low-emission and energy-efficient vessels under the Harit Nauka – Inland Vessels Green Transition Guidelines.
