airportNewcastle International Airport (NCL) is progressing plans for a proposed cargo and logistics development that could expand freight activity and support employment in the North East of England.
The proposed AirLink facility would be built on land to the south of the airport’s runway. The development is planned to cover around 620,000 square feet and would include space for cargo operators, freight forwarders and ground handling services.
The project could create up to 1,000 jobs directly at the airport site. A further 900 roles could be supported through supply chains and related businesses if the development proceeds. The airport also estimates the scheme could contribute up to 165 million GBP a year to the regional economy.
The facility would serve as a base for companies involved in air cargo operations and is intended to support the airport’s existing freight activity. Around 4,000 tonnes of goods are currently imported and exported through the airport each year.
The AirLink proposal was presented to investors and developers during the MIPIM conference in Cannes, where representatives from the North East Combined Authority, Newcastle City Council and Invest Newcastle promoted development opportunities in the region.
Public consultation events are taking place to inform local residents and businesses about the project, while discussions with companies that could occupy the site are continuing.
AirLink is an exciting development that would deliver major benefits for the North East - creating thousands of jobs, generating millions for the economy and unlocking more investment opportunities.
This development would also build on the significant contribution the Airport already makes to the regional economy - it already adds more than £1bn in Gross Value Added (GVA) each year and is one of the region’s largest employers with around 3,500 people onsite and a further 17,000 roles are supported through its supply chain.
Since unveiling the plans last year, we’ve had positive and constructive conversations with residents, businesses and partners about the benefits that AirLink would bring and these will continue as we progress with the proposals.
Newcastle Airport has made a strong commitment to invest in its cargo services to meet growing demand and AirLink has the potential to transform our operations even further, strengthening the region’s position as a leading cargo gateway.
Private development firm Buccleuch Property, working with Argon Properties, has been selected as the preferred developer for the project. The airport expects to submit a planning application in the near future.
Plans for the site include modern logistics units with direct apron access, allowing cargo to be loaded and unloaded directly between aircraft and warehouse facilities. The airport says this arrangement could support businesses handling time-sensitive shipments, including pharmaceuticals, automotive components and other high-priority goods.
The development could also attract companies in sectors such as advanced manufacturing and pharmaceuticals seeking logistics bases close to air freight services.
Newcastle Airport is a major regional asset and AirLink is exactly the type of development that would help drive further growth and investment in the region.
With the potential to create thousands of new jobs, the facility would significantly strengthen the region’s logistics and supply chain capabilities and it sends a clear message that the North East is growing, ambitious and fit to compete on a global stage.
