
Glass and glass product manufacturing prices rose in December (0.2%) for the second consecutive month, concluding a year in which glass product prices and the manufacturing of glass-related products were up 3.2% compared to the end of 2024. This is according to the United States Labor Department’s Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures inflation before it reaches customers.
December’s PPI shows that flat glass and architectural metal product prices remained relatively stable in December. However, year-to-year prices indicate that costs jumped substantially in 2025 compared to 2024 for several glass industry-related products, specifically in the metals sector.
—The cost of flat glass products ticked up by 0.3% in December. On a year-to-year basis, flat glass product prices were up 3.5% compared to December 2024.
—The cost to manufacture flat glass remained stable in December. However, year-to-year prices remained up 3.7% compared to December 2024.
—The cost of fabricated structural metal products increased yet again, rising by 0.2% in December after November’s increase of 0.7%. Year to year, the price of fabricated structural metal products was up 8.7% compared to December 2024.
—Ornamental and architectural metalwork prices dropped for the first time in months, slightly blunting a 1% increase in November and a 1.6% increase in October. The year-to-year PPI for the commodity was up 11.5% compared to December 2024. Ornamental and architectural metalwork manufacturers develop architectural metalwork, including handrails, balcony rails, screen doors, window guards and other architectural fittings.
—The price of metal windows (except storm sash) was unchanged in December, offering a respite for buyers following several months of surging prices. On a year-to-year basis, metal window prices were up 18.1% compared to December 2024.
—Metal door prices rose by 0.4% in December. Year-to-year prices for the commodity were up 10.7% in December compared to December 2024.
—The price of builders’ hardware products (lock units, key blanks and door and window hardware) jumped by 1.7% in December. Year-to-year prices for the products were up 11.1% in December compared to December 2024.
