USA, California, San Jose: LS Power Grid California has been selected by the California ISO to develop a new underground transmission line, which will connect PG&E’s Substation B in downtown San Jose with Silicon Valley Power’s Northern Receiving Station Substation at 4949 Centennial Blvd. in Santa Clara.

The new 11-km (7-mi) line is planned beneath San Jose and Santa Clara, aimed at strengthening the South Bay power grid.

The company will be responsible for financing, constructing, owning, operating, and maintaining the 230-kV underground line. The California ISO estimates the project cost at up to $200 M, with expected commissioning by June 2030.

LS Power’s president of development, Paul Thessen, said the project builds on the company’s experience in transmission development and its expanding presence in California.

The project comes as technology companies increase demand for more reliable electricity supplies to support energy-intensive sectors such as artificial intelligence. PG&E is also accelerating infrastructure development to meet growing regional demand.

LS Power is currently involved in additional transmission upgrades across the Bay Area, including two major projects. One will link a new terminal near Metcalf Substation in South San Jose to downtown San Jose, while another will connect a planned terminal near Newark Substation in Fremont to Silicon Valley Power’s facility in Santa Clara via Alviso.

Both developments involve largely underground transmission infrastructure and are expected to be operational by 2028.
