powerplantThe installation of an Antaris wind turbine in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) was indeed an exciting project!
Riyadh is situated in a desert region characterised by:- high temperatures (often above 45 °C)- dry air- sometimes strong, but also highly variable wind conditions- sandstorms
The advantages of Antaris wind turbines ‘Made in Germany’, and their use in Riyadh:
1. Robustness in extreme conditions
The turbines must withstand heat, sand and dust. The features of the Antaris wind turbines are as follows:- crucially, enclosed generators to prevent sand ingress- durable materials with robust steel construction, including hot-dip galvanised components and stainless steel fastenings- minimal maintenance requirements, as no gearbox is installed- special edge protection on the repeller blades to protect against sand abrasion
2. Low to medium wind speeds
In desert regions, the wind is not constantly strong. Antaris turbines are therefore suitable because they:- start up even at low wind speeds- can operate even in turbulent conditions thanks to their built-in safety parameters
3. Decentralised energy supply
Such systems are particularly useful in regions outside dense grid infrastructure (e.g. industrial sites, farms, remote buildings):- Complement to solar energy (very common in Saudi Arabia)- Hybrid solutions (wind + PV + storage + Sunny Island System)- Problem with PV: due to dust and sand in the air, the modules must be cleaned with fresh water approximately every 3 weeks.
In the current project, the Antaris 7.5 kW system, mounted on a 21-metre-high mast in a hybrid system, supplies the telecommunications station with clean energy.
