The
Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's
(LA Metro) board on Jan. 22 will consider approving advancements on two major infrastructure projects.
The board will consider certification of the final environmental impact report (FEIR) for the extension of the
C Line light-rail service to Torrance
from its current terminus at Redondo Beach, LA Metro officials said in a press release.
The 4.5-mile extension would operate as part of the K Line when completed and would connect the South Bay community to downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Norwalk and other locations.
The LA Metro board considered three light-rail alternatives and a bus option prior to selecting the locally preferred alternative (LPA), which is the project version most favored by board members
and according to public comments. The LPA was selected by the board
because of its placement on an existing LA Metro-owned freight-rail corridor, reducing the need for land acquisition and neighborhood disruptions, LA Metro officials said.
Board members
also at the meeting will consider selecting an LPA for the
Sepulveda Transit Corridor project
, which calls for construction of a transit-rail option for traveling through Sepulveda Pass, the low mountain pass between San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles and location of the notoriously congested Interstate 405.
LA Metro staff recommend the board select the option that calls for a heavy-rail underground transit line between the Van Nuys Metrolink Station and the E Line Expo and Sepulveda Station, modified to connect to the Van Nuys G Line Station and future East San Fernando Valley light rail station at Van Nuys Boulevard.
That option was estimated to cost $24.2 billion in 2023. LA Metro staff anticipate needing additional federal, state and local funding, as well as private investment through a potential public-private partnership, LA Metro officials said.
Before the full LA Metro board considers the C Line FEIR and the LPA, the planning and programming committee on Jan. 14 will review the proposals. More information on both meetings can be found
