The partial commissioning of the new Tram-Westtangente service has been marked in Munich’s Laim district, as Line 14 officially began operations.

According to Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), more than 5,000 visitors attended a citizens’ festival held on Laimer Anger on 28 February 2026. The event marked the first day of service on the new cross-city tram link, which connects key western districts of the Bavarian capital.

The new Line 14 runs every ten minutes during the day between Pasing station, Laim underground station and Gondrellplatz via the newly completed section along Fürstenrieder Straße and Ammerseestraße. Services operate every 20 minutes from 10pm and in the early morning. This creates an additional east–west connection in the west of the city.

The newly opened section is approximately 1,500 metres long and includes three fully barrier-free stops: Fürstenrieder Straße, Laimer Platz and Aindorferstraße. Platforms are designed for near-level boarding and are already built to accommodate longer trams of up to 56 metres in the future. Three-car vehicles are currently operating on the line.

The Tram-Westtangente is one of Munich's largest and most important infrastructure projects in recent years. It closes a gap in our route network, which is strongly oriented towards the city centre. I am glad that our city has resumed the expansion of its tram network after a break of almost a decade and that today we can celebrate the opening of the first construction phase after only 22 months.

More public transport is a basic prerequisite for attractive mobility and thus quality of life in Munich. Munich is growing, so an improvement in the public transport service is necessary to prevent permanent congestion of the road network. The very good standardised assessment of the Tram-Westtangente shows the great benefit for the entire city and especially for the west of Munich.

As part of the works, the existing Fürstenrieder Straße stop on Line 19, in operation since December 2025, has also been made barrier-free and equipped with a free-standing dynamic passenger information display featuring a read-aloud function for visually impaired passengers.

This milestone forms part of the opening for the Tram-Westtangente project, which aims to strengthen orbital connections and relieve pressure on existing bus and underground services. Further stages of the scheme are expected to follow as work progresses on additional sections of the route.

Additional construction phases will extend the line southwards from Ammerseestraße towards Waldfriedhof and later to Aidenbachstraße underground station. In the north, closure of the gap between Fürstenrieder Straße and Romanplatz depends on completion of an environmental composite tube at Laim S-Bahn station, being built by Deutsche Bahn as part of the second S-Bahn main line project. Both sections are scheduled for commissioning in 2028.

Once the entire route is finished, it will be served by Line 12 along its full length, creating a fast cross-city connection from Obersendling via Hadern, Sendling and Laim to Nymphenburg and onwards to Schwabing Nord.
