Detailed designs have been released for Stage 1 of the Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) Rail Upgrade in Queensland.

The project will realign the existing rail line between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains, remove three level crossings, expand park ‘n’ ride facilities at Beerburrum, Nambour and Landsborough, and deliver a range of new or upgraded rail and road infrastructure to improve safety.

The B2N Upgrade has been described as a “critical enabler” for The Wave – a major infrastructure project that will include a heavy passenger rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya, which will connect to a metro-style service, allowing journeys to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD.

The upgrade will also complete the “missing link” of duplicated rail between Beerburrum and Beerwah.

The new designs incorporate feedback from the community, which was provided last year. They give the public a more detailed idea of how the upgrade will change rail travel and freight movement along the North Coast Line.

Major construction works started for the rail duplication in late 2025, with earthworks and supporting activities progressing along the corridor as crews build the foundations for new road and rail infrastructure.

The Federal Government has committed $616.7 million towards the $1 billion Stage 1 of the B2N Rail Upgrade, with the Queensland Government investing $387.5 million.

The designs can be viewed on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website here.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said: “This is excellent progress for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade, which will support better public transport connections for Sunshine Coast communities and help take pressure off the Bruce Highway.

“Once complete, the upgrade will significantly improve the capacity and reliability of the North Coast Line, supporting more efficient passenger services and stronger freight connections between the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Brisbane and beyond.

“B2N plays a crucial role in delivering The Wave from Brisbane through to Kawana and on to Maroochydore Airport.”
