Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has issued a work order to the Coimbatore Corporation to conduct a land plan survey (LPS) for the proposed metro rail project in the city. The corporation has since begun building valuation along a 1.4-km stretch of Sathyamangalam Road, from Textool Bridge to Surya Hospital.
CMRL has sanctioned âš2 crore for carrying out the LPS. A corporation official confirmed that digital surveying and utility mapping using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) have been completed on the stretch. The mapped utilities include underground drainage pipelines, water supply lines, electricity and gas lines, and telecommunication cables.
Once the LPS is finalized, the cost of relocating utilities will be calculated and submitted to CMRL. The utility mapping is part of a broader exercise in corridor one, covering 20.4 km from Ukkadam Bus Stand to Neelambur Integrated Station via Coimbatore International Airport, and in corridor two, spanning 14.4 km from Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran stated that nearly 75% of the LPS work on Sathyamangalam Road is complete. The district collector has directed the corporation to finish the building valuation within two weeks to facilitate the land acquisition process.
He also mentioned plans to establish a dedicated metro rail project office in Coimbatore, pending CMRL approval. Once the survey is completed, a stakeholder meeting involving representatives from CMRL, the highways department, and the public works department will be held to review progress and determine the next steps for the project.
