The expansion of Terminal 2 (T2) at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport under Project Anantha is expected to be delayed, with the crucial environmental clearance (EC) still pending. The project, being spearheaded by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, was initially scheduled to begin in April, but the absence of a valid clearance has halted progress.
The delay stems from the expiry of the tenure of the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) in March. As a result, the application for EC has now been escalated to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).
Sources close to the airport said that the airport's master plan is currently being revised to incorporate recommendations from the MoEF. Construction will commence only after the revised plan receives formal approval.
"The process will likely take another four months. A recent stakeholder meeting involving the CISF and Kerala State Industrial Enterprises Ltd (KSIE) gathered all necessary inputs, which will help finalise the updated master plan," said a source familiar with the development.
In addition to the terminal expansion, the proposed five-star hotel project on the city side of the airport is also awaiting clearance. The SEIAA had earlier directed Adani Airport Holdings Ltd to revise its conceptual plan, raising concerns over the environmental impact of the basement component. This revised plan is also under review by the MoEF.
Meanwhile, refurbishment work on Terminal 1 (the domestic terminal) is progressing steadily. The canopy installation is nearing completion and the new parking facility is already operational. The T1 upgrades are expected to be completed in the next two months.
Despite the hurdles, the airportâs future development remains on track. During the Invest Kerala Summit in February, the Adani Group committed âš5,500 crore over five years towards the airportâs development. Additionally, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) last year approved a âš1,200 crore development plan, while a broader âš3,000 crore master plan is still under AERAâs review.
