railwayThe North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has announced that British Railways Standard Class 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76079 ”Pocket Rocket” has been sold to the Strathspey Railway in the Scottish Highlands, where the locomotive will undergo a full overhaul and return to steam in due course.
Built at Horwich Works in 1957 and affectionately known as the “Pocket Rocket”, No. 76079 has been a familiar and well-loved presence on the NYMR for many years. The locomotive holds a unique distinction as the only preserved member of its class to have worked on the national main line in preservation, hauling services between Grosmont and Whitby on the Esk Valley Line, as well as appearing on charter duties further afield.
Following the expiry of its boiler ticket and after a period of careful consideration, the NYMR Board concluded that the locomotive’s long-term future would be best served by a new custodian with the capacity and commitment to undertake the major works required. The Strathspey Railway, based at Aviemore, has acquired No. 76079 with precisely that intention – to give the engine the comprehensive overhaul it deserves and a new operational home in the heart of the Cairngorms.
Laura Strangeway, Chief Executive of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, said: “No. 76079 has given outstanding service over many seasons and has earned a special place in the affections of our staff, volunteers and visitors alike. While it is naturally a moment of reflection to see her leave Pickering, we are delighted that she is going to a railway that shares our values and is genuinely committed to her restoration. The Strathspey Railway will provide a fitting new home, and we wish them every success with the project ahead.”
Gordon Kirk, Managing Director at the Strathspey Railway, added: “We are thrilled to welcome No. 76079 to the Strathspey. She is a locomotive with real character and main line pedigree, and we look forward to undertaking the work needed to return her to steam for the enjoyment of visitors to the Highlands for many years to come.”
The sale forms part of the NYMR’s ongoing fleet strategy, ensuring that the railway’s resources are focused on the locomotives best matched to its operational requirements while securing positive futures for engines whose long-term place lies elsewhere. Proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in the NYMR’s heritage fleet and infrastructure.
Arrangements for the locomotive’s move to Aviemore are currently being finalised and will be announced in due course.
