railwayThe New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has awarded Siemens Mobility and LK Comstock a contract to equip the Fulton-Liberty lines of the New York City metro network with communication-based train control (CBTC). Siemens's contract share is worth nearly EUR 332 million (USD 390 million). The contract includes the modernisation with Trainguard MT on 65 km of track and in 23 stations in accordance with the New York Subway Interoperability Interface Specifications. This will replace signalling technology in Brooklyn and Queens that is in part more than 100 years old. Vehicle intervals of up to 90 seconds are planned. Siemens is integrating interlocking and train control functions, including 5G-based wireless communication, and replacing track circuits with axle counters. LK Comstock is putting existing signalling systems out of operation and installing 24 new custom-designed switches, 94 switch motors, four new interlocking and train control rooms as well as more than 1,200 km of cable. In addition, a distributed antenna system and fibre optic cabling will be installed to provide continuous 5G mobile coverage across 62 track sections and 18 stations. Upon completion of the work, Siemens will sign a 25-year maintenance contract with two five-year extension options. The project covers the corridor between Jay Street-MetroTech in Brooklyn and Ozone Park in Queens, served by lines A and C.
